I'm new here and need advice with my 505

There are people that have a lot of experience, some just don't build stuff for a living.

Here's a little tidbit I found with a quick search, same general build as yours using the trick flow 270's on a 10.5:1 engine. I think it is beyond your expectations even with that crummy 9-9.5:1 compression.

Depending on where the 906's cc, normally in the high 80's, the TF270 is at 78 to start. So it would give you a potential compression bump right there.

It sounds to me your 906s are milled to 72 cc if you are running a .039 head gasket. Your engine data sheet might say which head gasket thickness they used to achieve 9.5 ...if you want to know want your exact cc's you need to know that. 78 cc aluminum head will likely lower your compression unless they you have them shaved too.
Racetec/autotec are good pistons and are Similiar to JE pistons..The owner of JE pistons sold the company and after a few years started these two new piston lines They specialize in affordable custom pistons. Which sounds like what you have.
Personally if it was my engine I would put in a lot bigger cam....with or without a head change. It looks like you have a dual plane intake, can't tell what headers your running but those probably won't help it get to 600hp.

If he goes with a "lot bigger cam" he'll loose cylinder pressure until the rpms come way up... So that translates to pistons again...

Which IMO means build another short block..

I'd do the head swap and accept the performance that it provides...
 
I missed the heads cut .095 which is quite a bit.

You just don't know what you have until it's taken apart and measured.

The cam he has is 236-242 at .050 286/294
TF cam is 243-247 296/300

Not a big jump. It might make good steam with the head/induction swap. I'd still want the extra lift to fill the cylinders... :)

Is your car a torqueflite or a stick? Is the 450hp you mentioned engine dyno or chassis dyno? If that is engine dyno, that does seem weak for a 505 with a large cam. If thats chassis dyno, i personally dont believe the "numbers" much, they are unreliable imop,being skewed by the torque converter. Also chassis numbers are usually 15% to 20% off of what an engine dyno shows. You might have 515-540 hp now at the crank.
Second question: you didnt mention headers, and it looks like you have exhaust manifolds. You might az well kick your motor in the nuts. I built a 511 with a crane 509, milder cam than yours, with stock manifolds, that wouldn't pull a fat girl off a tricycle. Headers were worth almost a hundred hp. Tbe FIRST thing i would do is headers. If I'm wrong , and it has got headers, excuse my bad eyesight .
In my humble opinion, you need more info about what you have now. Really has that huge dish? Really has .095 milled off the heads?(thats a ton).
Before i bought anything, i would pull one head and see what i really have. (Except headers, i would buy headers).
 
1 wild R/t I agree with your thinking. My saying A lot bigger cam is a overstatement. But I think I would talk to a cam company like bullet and have them grind a cam that wouldn't lose much compression but would wake it up and let the 505 breathe. A custom grind I think could wake it up vs one off the shelf. And would respond better to whatever head upgrade came.
 
I have stainless headers . And 2 1/2 duel w x pipe .. no that is power at the crank shaft .. and the heads are.095 milled .. I feel the car is peppy but far from what I would like to achieve.. that's why I was curious if I could just buy a hone drop in new pistons and rings ,put new gaskets on it cam it up and put trick flows on it . But it seems that everyone agrees that may not be the best idea

GOOD is not always cheap,very cheap is rarely good.
I would speak with one of the guys I mentioned above to get a feel for what you have and what you want. Spend your money wisely and get the best out of your money.:)
 
If your old heads are milled that much, check to see how much your intake manifold was milled before you put it on new heads
 
You could certainly switch pistons. It's your engine and if you plan on keeping it build it the way you want. You probably will be happier, more compression gives you more efficiency. But you need to figure dynamic compression as well if you are trying to run on a specific octane. It isn't going to make a big hp change going from 9.5 to 10.5 but it is usually a combination of improvements that will get you to your hp goal.

Shaving the heads that much and paying for a custom piston with a huge dish seems counter productive. That was a sizable machine shop bill for certain.

Let me rephrase this to match the intent.
1.) Stop with the Internet polling unless you want a real mess. Don’t pull anything apart until you’ve established a solid plan.
2.) Set goals for the car, whether that’s horsepower or 1/4 mile performance and don’t move the goalpost during the build. Can’t count the times I’ve dealt with that.
3,) Establish the available budget and make sure it’s realistic. Plan for the unexpected.
4.) Call someone like Duane that can see if your budget and goals align and then let HIM provide the recipe to get there.

If I could get to the 600hp range using my block crank and rods for $8000 I would be extremely happy . I guess I am wondering if that price sounds reasonable for my expectations. I don't want to sound like a total fool. At least anymore then I do now.lol

Depending upon what you find when you open it up, your goals and budget should work but that’s for Duane (or whoever you chose) to decide. He’ll be able to steer you clear of making incorrect choices for your application and goals and make the overall project successful. Just keep in mind that adding power always exposes the next weak link in the chain (like transmissions and rear axles, inadequate exhaust systems, etc) so pad the budget and go forward conservatively.
