Anyone try Eastwood De Kote paint stripper? Will being chemical stripping a hood this winter and looking for a stripper that’s relatively friendly to this old boys health.

The only stripper I have found worth a crap is Klean-Strip Aircraft Stripper. That being said they were forced to change to formula to remove methylene chloride and I have not tried the new formula.

agree.... aircraft stripper......here's a tip: cover the stripper with plastic to keep it from drying up, walk away and let it do the work

Also make sure the metal your working on is not cold.......Heat up the metal a bit with a propane torch....Just to warm it up, not hot.....Then I would work a manageable area....In other words, I do not place stripper over the whole hood. Work a 2 foot square section at a time....Also place a large piece plastic under my work area due to the mess..A couple rolls of paper towels, couple paper grocery bags and a 5g bucket of warm soapy water....Even with protective equipment I always get stripper on my skin from splatter or hitting it....Then I can wash it off in the bucket...

As others stated, I too only use aircraft stripper.....

its all crap these days after the new formulas came out
especially on older paints and primers

You can forget about all strippers as of 2019.
As has already been said, they were mandated to remove the methylene chloride from the formula and it no longer works worth a ****.

Even the whiz bang stuff with the picture of the airplane isn’t any good anymore.

brake fluid seems to work the best for me.:poke:

Good luck finding it in the US, Canada might be different. I bought 3 gallons in a surplus place. I have a Sherman Williams account and they told me they had to take it all off the shelf and turn it in. Sucks because I use it almost daily!

What will make you madder is research why the chemical was removed and how fast the EPA reacted. There was something else going on as the govt does not work that fast for anything.

I use it on getting the baked on grease off of distributors. A alternate for me is oven cleaner. Just sucks taking it off in the parts cleaner makes the solution slippery as hell on your hands.

The original post stated he wanted something good for his health. With that said, all the post are correct and the new formulas don't work well. In fact you'll putting on multiple coats which in turn raise the risk. My suggestion is if you have access to an air compressor, get a DA and sand the finish off. It's safer than stripper and now a days will be faster and more effective. Plus you won't run the risk of having contamination in the new paint. And truthfully, with stripper you need to wash it off, so now you're putting water on bare metal and you're gonna get flash rust which will need sanded. JMO

now I use it just to soften up the paint
I put it on thick and let it dry and come back later to sand it off with
a paint stripper wheel or da
no need to keep it wet anymore..lol
the factory paints and primers will laugh at the stuff and
it will take forever to remove them just using the stripper alone.
you better have a lot of time and patience to do it that way anymore
I wash metal off with a thinner or solvent , never ever water...

There is a RediStrip in Roesell, Illinois. Do yourself a favor and take it there and have it dipped. You'll get back a perfectly clean piece that looks like a brand new hood.

There's also Restoration Specialist in Wisconsin. They will dip it and have it EDP coated. It coats EVERYWHERE. Inside and out. I had my 63 Dodge done by them and it came back like a new AMD body.

I used the Redi-Strip in Roselle Il., and my fenders came out great! But,
anyone that dips a hood has to know that all of the vibration isolators will
be gone!!!!! What now? That hood will never be the same. Try as you may,
you'll never be able to get it straight again. Use the D.A. with some 80!
If anyone knows how to put that stuff back in, I'd like to know about it!

Like posted already safety clean aircraft stripper is very good, you can get it by the qt , gal , or rattle can.
always wear safety glass's when using and a paint mask if in a building ect. and not outside.

Zyzzyx, if you has a paint supply store such as a PPG dealer, there are body panel foams that can be bought just for those purposes. Some are softer than others. I redid my Roadrunner hood and it turned out pretty nice. I wish I'd got a little softer foam but it still looks good and no one has ever know it was replaced. Stuff isn't cheap tho.
