What might anyone know about axle or differential 'vents'? I have seen them in diagrams. Checking my housing after installing my 2nd set of green bearings that gave me 1500 miles, I don't see one, at least as I've seen on diagrams. I have a '65 Coronet housing in my '63 Plymouth, 742 case. Thanks.

I do believe its the bolt that holds the brake line Y fitting on the axle housing.

This is one of the diagrams I looked at seeing this as what appears as a standalone, Bill76 says it's likely part of the brake line block I see on my axle having a knurled cap on it. I had this block off around 15 years ago when I swapped out my '63 housing for the '65 and cleaned it (mineral spirits soaking) but as an intact unit. Will see what's said about servicing this or need to replace...read that a clogged vent isn't healthy for the rear...something I never gave thought to.

My new S60 has two vents for that reason.

That's one way of cleaning the vent. Cannot take it apart, 'cause of the way their made. But, routine service for them, to 'clear' the vent...during oil change, and checking the rear axle lube...simply twist the cap on the vent, a few times. That loosens any dirt/crud that might clog the vent, and keeps it breathing.
Thought everybody knew that!

It's these kids today.
Ha! Everytime it comes up, I remember my old shop teacher. Ex-lightweight pro boxer! I'd ask a question, in the shop, he's come up behind me, and beat his fists on my shoulders! Hehe...made me think, before asking anything.

Had a math teacher that liked to use his knuckles on the top of your head.....or rub the top of your head hard with his knuckles. It's no wonder we didn't learn anything! lol
