Road trip low profile

It's all fun and games until the fuzz shows up. Sheesh, wet blanket! :)

Doesn't CA have antique tag laws? I've never lived there, but even I know about the desirability of those original "black tags". They're pretty rare these days, right?
You get one of those originals on an old ride like Dennis' and what cop would think "shenanigans", for heavens' sake? What's he want, a stack of 50+ yearly stickers stacked on the tag?
Come on now...

We have a couple ways of going about it here in TN, for example. If you don't want to run a "modern" tag, you can get the usual "ANTIQUE" tag (yes, tag in singular - no front tags here) that you pay for once (cheap, too, like $25) and never again like I have - or, you are allowed to register an original same-year
tag if you find one to your car as well (in my case, I'd find a '68 original TN tag and register it to the car - also at the same one-time only price).
Sort of the state's way of supporting the hobby.

Move to australia we don't have any registration labels at all well not in south australia ! cops check via number plate

Some states like NYS don't even use those on the plate anymore. Window sticker tells all, so my sticker on my plate it from like 72 or something. No one bugs me and this is NYS we are talking. They will pull you over for a paint chip!

Just drove from Pittsburgh to Vegas with no plates on a PT Cruiser. Not even a look. I was sure I would get nailed in the first few miles.

Some one is FOS. The tags must be permanently attached to the plate, not something that is removable. Get a copy of the California Vehicle code or ask the CHP to explain that to you. If you want to drive on a public street or hi-way you must comply with State law. At least in California. The legal way would be to use a legally assigned and tagged set of plates ( you might also check with your car insurance to see what they say about a non currently tagged car involved in an accident) when you are driving your car on the streets and put whatever you want when you are on private property or parked at a show. There are rules and regulations for a reason that might not be immediately apparent to some. It is not personal, they are for everybody.

The one who's FOS as you put it is you....

Typical Cop.. I'm Right!!! You Don't Know WTF Your Talking About!!!

Oh crap, I'm wrong? Well hold on, I'll beat you up & then I'll be right again....

I'm not one to bash the Police but I do know that they do NOT like to be proven wrong. Their training is such that THEY are expected to be the one in control of any situation that they find themselves in.
When confronted by a citizen that knows the law and their rights, many officers retort with "What are you, a LAWYER now"?
Really? Knowing what your own rights is supposed to be excluded to all but attorneys? It is really easy to violate someones rights when the citizens don't know what they are!

What's a "window sticker"? :)
(I'm teasing - I used to live in a state (VA) that has all sorts of window stickers - we just don't here in TN).

The Plate is legit and current in registration. A YOM. I’ve ordered the eBay items.

Just found this on Hagerty's website.

The 35 states that definitely have YOM laws are Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Here is the article.

Things may have changed...that article is from 2005.

READ THE COMPLETE ARTICLE THAT YOU POSTED. YOM plates must be submitted to the DMV for authentication and be approved before you do anything. You don't just buy the plate extension and you are good to go. There is a procedure. All I am saying is to not give LEGAL advice to people that could be wrong. I am sure that if he got cited that you would not pay for his ticket.

I didn't write the article. I just happened across it and figured some people have a little more sense than to just read a post and drive across country illegally. It was just an article talking about YOM. It was supposed to be a link for general information. Anyone with common sense would go to the local DMV and sort out the details. Pretty sure not everyone on this forum is lacking in the sense area. A little common sense and a little bit of Google and you can get the answers you seek.

Here is the law as written in Georgia..

And here is the application.

And here is a list of guys that can restore your plates.

Relax, he’s not pointing at you, he doesn’t like me this week...

Good thing I live 300 plus miles away or he’d be at my door with his badge & baton..

He needs to get a life

Jesus Chrysler, I made many trips to DMV. Plate is legit. Paperwork and process.
There is more. Got pulled over by SJPD and told the plates were not registered and were surrendered to a yard in the 80’s. That part is true, but they are clean and registered now to my car. SJPD ran the car by vin and found it to be current. So, any LEO who sees and runs the plate may have to confirm it by vin. DMV says it CANNOT be fixed, I have to live with it. **** DMV. I ain’t going back ever if I can help it. If you are current LEO, run it and see what you find.

get a LEO with a hard-on for car guys
or by the book regs

you may have more trouble than it's worth

-----------------------------------

most LEO's are pretty reasonable
& some are real car guys themselves

growing up my best friend dad was a CHP Lt. in Martinez,
SF east-bay Area CHP headquarters at the time
he was a hard case, by the book
but was a total car guy too
me & his son Jeff, pushed it, he was pretty cool most the time
do something stupid or be rude, you were screwed

I have quite a few friends that are LEO's
Game Warden Lt. (they can do everything, as same as a cop can, even traffic stuff)
I know a couple CHP's Lt. & patrol (grew up with a bunch of them)
I know the Sheriff & a few deputies, here in my community
(LEO's they all live in my neighborhood now, nice quite usually, safe place)

most of them are pretty damn cool
if you're not an asshole, show due respect

you cop an attitude, no matter whom you are,
your screwed, They'll **** with you within their realm/jurisdiction

just be polite, 95% of the time the LEO will be cool
might just write a fix it ticket or something that can be easily signed off
or just a warning if you're lucky

I'd be more concerned being out of state & some BS go down
some good ol'boy or rookie by the book
search at 1st comes back, from a plate from a old car/salvage
or them just not caring & give you some BS ticket
for a bunch of safety stuff/fix it BS, impound your car etc.

I'd think the removable tag holder wouldn't fly
if they really wanted to press the issue (they can be ******** too)
what's to stop someone from changing tags from car to car
(I know they are serial #'s to a specific car, but the cop doesn't know that tell the run it)

is it really worth the hassles ?,
I guess that's for each to figure out themselves

HAVE A GREAT TRIP DENNIS!

Well the problem with that is on a Black plate (YOM) they want the original sticker (in Dennis’s case a 69 sticker) visible in the well on the plate and the current sticker displayed on the separate well (the tab I linked earlier)

If I were Dennis I would print out the information from the DMV website & highlight the pertinent paragraph...
