We Need a Tie-breaker: Daytona or Superbird

70 Superbird Nascar #40 Pete Hamilton & Richard Petty.jpg

I "think" the Superbird was actually a bit faster
NOW:
This is No Reflection on Dodges' part...
Of course not...
Unfair advantage goes to Plymouth
Dodge was under stress and a Time Line to build for the "year"
Plymouth got into the Fray/Mix for the 1970 year...
So, it could be said the Dodge did the "Leg Work" and Plymouth "built upon the foundation"
The Superbird has subtle differences, such as a Taller Wing with adjustments

If you are comparing stock to stock, the interior of a 4 speed car would sway me to the Plymouth. The pistol grip, the high back bucket seats, the locking steering wheel. These were changes implemented for the 1970 model year.
Exterior styling, I favor the Dodge. I just wig out at the beauty of the 68-70 Charger. The nose kills much of what I love about the car but those bulging fenders and quarter panels are still there and damn... they still look great.
In race trim, all hunkered down over NASCAR wide wheels and tires, they both look amazing. That is one of the many faults of modern NASCAR races...the cars look so different from what the street versions look like.
I still give the win to the Dodge.

I prefer the Daytona, slightly more subtle. Not a huge fan of the giant Plymouth logo, or the vinyl top. Still wouldn't throw a Superbird out of my garage.
There is a Black Superbird that sometimes shows up at the Northridge Big Boy restaurant. NO vinyl top and the metalwork is nicely done. That dude made it look like a proper factory job.

Is that the one that was factory white, or a clone?

Well, it's a bird.
And was never in too many TV shows and movies.
(Of course neither car really much resembles the base car.)
It would have been much more interesting if Plymouth had launched it on a 69 body simultaneously.
What more can I say?

There are photos of the Superbird prototype, at Creative Industries, and it was a 69 Road Runner.

I havent had the opportunity to own either , I have seen a Hemi Daytona up here up close. As well as a few Superbirds. I like both. Its hard to pick one over the other without the personal experience.

A member of Dodge Charger. Com built a replica of the 69 Superbird prototype.

Now I see why we are so crazy. They were crazy back in the day too. Roadrunner was only 2 years old in '69. And Plymouth thought. "Nope. Need more cowbell!"

Kind of makes me wonder how many of those are clones. :D
I'd say most in that old vintage Riverside photo
are/were 'body in white' originally
delivered to specific MoPar funded/approved teams
not vin no fender tag etc. on any of them :blah:
pure basis of the real racecars
far from clones

Not too many "Body in White" cars come up for sale. The pros beat the crap out of them.

Some of the lesser funded teams converted street versions to racecars, and some were older racecars converted to newer versions of the Charger and Road Runner then updated to aero cars with the necessary parts.
