Any Tips on Prepping The Glove Box and Dash Pad Surfaces Before I Dye Them?

Going From Blue To Saddle.

Thanks

Clean till your arm falls off...then switch to the other arm.....

Basic cleaning, then wax & grease remover. Finally microfiber towel with alcohol.

Wax & Grease remover can be purchased at any automotive paint store. Any brand. That's the only item that you might not find at other locations other than a parts store that deals with some paint supplies.

I just use wax and grease remover. I've never used Herb's dye, only SEM, and its awesome.

Don't be cheap with the wax and grease remover !
Worst thing in the world is everything looks great then you have a fish eye /flaw !

I agree with wax and grease remover. Some paint stores sell a bug and tar remover that has naptha in it and it seems to work. If the part can be washed with soap and water, I recommend that. The last step before paint I use a tac cloth to remove lint and dust. I just dyed my console with Herbs paint and the color was spot on but I had a little problem small droplets spitting out of the can.

I just did my glovebox door and dash plastic. I used Spray 9 with a toothbrush and kept using it until the rags came back clean. Then used Windex, then alcohol. Overkill perhaps, but it turned out perfectly. I used parts from three different dashes in two different colours to make them all a different colour yet.

I used warm soapy water, Dawn, and scrubbed a couple time. With interior parts you just need to get any ‘shine’ of so it doesn’t fish eye. The Herbs dye is pretty awesome stuff. I like the glass cleaner step as well, I use the foaming aerosol stuff. Use light to medium coats and it’ll turn out great.

I had some white handles on my boat that turned dirty and black/moldy looking. They looked horrible. I scrubbed them with Tilex Mildew and mold remover and painted them with Herb's white paint and they look great. I spoke with Herb and he too also used it on his boat interior pieces and at the time he said 3 years and no issues..

I'd be careful with the acetone, it doesn't get along well with many plastics!

True, but it's just a quick wipe. And some plastics aren't affected at all, like for instance the bottles that acetone is often packaged in. :)

The bottles are HDPE but most automotive plastic is ABS or PVC and they don't like acetone. A safer choice is wax and grease remover.

Sure it does. You can glue them back together after making a slurry once melted!!

i want to refresh the seat backs on my 67 GTX with some Herbs paints, im not looking for a color change.... my question is after i clean then clean and clean some more im going to wipe down with wax and grease , do i need to use a plastic adhesion promoter? these seat backs are steel, covered in a textured vinyl ? thats what it looks like.... any help is appreciated... thanks Rich

I just cleaned and used Wax and Grease Remover. Then masked the chrome and sprayed. Although I didn't change color it is very durable. Also as Medium Copper steering wheels are impossible to find, I used the same Herbs Dye on it. It was previously black. No problems yet, approximately 8 months old now.
