Did all A12s sold outside of california get exhaust tips? My car has the original turndown tailpipes, does that mean it was california only? I know dealer info is unavailable, but i would like to narrow it down if possible. I bought this car in the mid eighties, and it had been here in california for at least a few years before that. Is this an original california-sold car?

I was of the understanding that all of the California new sold cars were to utilize the turn down exhaust tips to comply to their emission standards.

Agreed. I was just wondering if everybody else got tips. Wondering if my turn downs meant it HAS to be a cali car?

Are there any signs of tail pipe extension hangers? I have no clue as I have wondered the same thing for all of the performance cars of that era from the 340 A-Bodies to all of the 440/Hemi RTs, etc. Being on the East Coast, never really seen any truly West Coast California cars out this way.

Other than the down pipes that i capped off a long time ago (i think my car may have been raced as a "pure" stocker in the early seventies, when headers weren't allowed), my exhaust is completely original.
I'll try to get some photos up here, but i'm 250 miles away from tje car at the moment.

Or Canadian... everyone tells me chrome tips where Standard on a '69 Bee... but I know where this car has been my entire life.

Plenty of California cars got tips, very few were deleted by law, 340’s got tips, 383’s got tips, 440-4’s got tips, 440-6’s in 69 got tips...426 Hemi’s in 69 got tips.. Beginning in 70 440-6 & 426 Hemi had their tips deleted due to noise emissions reduction... But some dealers did add them to sell cars....

To educate myself on this subject, would say a 71 model Cuda use the regular rear valance without the cut-out provisions for a California destined car knowing that it would have turn down tips instead of the bright tips?

On the subject of Canadian spec cars, was the omission of the exhaust tips similar to the California noise reduction package?

Great information and thanks for the input!!!

Yes 440-6 and Hemi got the blank valance with two half moon cutouts at the bottom edge
