Anyone here had a resto shop shoot a price to fix their car, then hold it hostage for extortion?

Yeah - what’s up with the rant. Understand the nightmare you’ve been thru but pls tell us who you are and highlights of your ride. Maybe some pics too. Agree with you on the issues we face in the resto area.

What a wall of text.....at least break it up with paragraphs.....

Are you griping about 25k to restore a complete car? People spend that and more for a complete paint job.....Do I agree with that pricing? Nope but it’s the nature of the beast.....

The rules and regulations paint shops have to deal with is ridiculous and expensive. The future of the smaller shops is very grim.....

As others stated go to the welcome wagon and introduce yourself and share some pics of your rides....

I just want to stop people who call a half assed paint job a restoration, and hold their victims cars hostage for extortion. If shops doing that is okay with you I am fine with you getting ripped off.

Who is you? That your referring to?

There is no one here or anywhere that wants sloppy work and a car held in paint prison.......you think your the first? I have been there twice and it does suck and very costly....

Where are the pictures of your claim? All I see is a newbie with an attitude and a flipping wall of text!

My body and paint man never lied to me. He was straight up to me from before the cars SHELL was picked up that is was gonna be $65/man hr + materials until the day he brought it back a year later and I have the $118K bill for that to prove it ! LOL

and I have the $118K bill for that to prove it !
YIKES !!! Was the car a real piece of **** or was he just a VERY slow worker ?!?

Its not often someone will work on a single car "full time", its just too monotonous. If you figure there are 2000 work hours in a year and you divide the 118k by the hourly rate it pretty much works out to a full time job. That's hard to believe.

Yikes is right! That's a lot of hours for a guy that does bodywork full time. My Charger project was probably similiar to your car as far as metal replacement and my buddy had around 400 hours in that. You couldn't have meant $118,000? In hindsight I bet you wish you would have at least done the metalwork yourself. We all know you are more than capable.

My current project I've been on for 5 years. It was saved from rusting away outside. It is all metal now and It is in primer. And The estimates to finish are 8,000-10,000 through a good shop. I'm finishing it myself because I can.

Don't forget that's Canuck dollars... and it includes the 13% tax we get f'd for on top.

My Bee was driven on heavily salted roads to ski hills in the Ottawa Valley and Quebec.. it was our daily driver 12 months a year.. 156,000 miles on the car and I beat the **** out of it as a teen on top at 100MPH + on gravel back roads. 3 frame rails replaced and every piece of floor metal from the firewall back. Both front fenders and headlight buckets received extensive work. Clean up of the full Chryco quarters that we installed like hacks into the roof joint back in 1978. FUll new door skins. You can see all the metal and body work in my restoration thread. 1100 hours in metal, body and paint by 4 guys at the shop (and I think it was around $18K in AMD metal) and about 1900 hours for me in free slave labour after that rebuilding and reinstalling everything else + a lot of NOS and reproduction replacement parts! My HOK paint supplies alone were over $7500. I have nothing to hide and the wife knows the tally.. I have $164K Cdn in the car and that doesn't include the $3600 my old man screwed me for at 10% when he sold it to me in 1980! Another tid bit of fact, my Daughters Ryerson University life insurance policy (with her being the Rec Administrator at Maple Leaf Gardens / Mattamy Centre) paid out at $162 K so I spent it all guilt free on something she loved as well. :)

That is when money is meaningless when it comes to honoring a family member....

Yes Greg, stated so right at the start of my restoration thread. Why I restored the car and called it Therapy.

Now where'd this guy go that's pissed his Sister is being held ransom, where are the pictures...

Yes, what you say is very prevalent. That’s the risk anyone is taking regarding not doing something yourself. Doesn’t matter if it’s paying someone to cut your grass, paying someone else to change your oil, paying someone to paint your car. We all open ourselves to being ripped off or sold short on quality when we aren’t able or aren’t willing to do something ourselves.
I know how and used to build garages for a living. I just payed someone else to build one for me for reasons related to time. I am sick at my stomach with the quality I received for the price I payed. I crossed all my bases to prevent what could possibly happen by choosing not to do it myself and those things still happened. As pissed as I still am, I realize that I opened that opportunity of disappointment by choosing not to do it myself. Therefore, I am not surprised. I take responsibility for allowing myself to be ripped off. It doesn’t make it right or ok. But, that’s the way it goes when we aren’t willing to do something ourselves, learn how to do something ourselves or take the time to do something ourselves.
That’s why it’s so important to do as much as we possibly can in all aspects of labor ourselves. Because the truth is, most people could careless about your satisfaction or giving you what you payed for in return. They are talkers to the point, your money is in their pockets.
Small business practices have changed dramatically in the last few decades. Small businesses used to pride themselves on satisfaction or advertising word to mouth. It’s not that way anymore for a few reasons. Car related labor is extremely risky, because they hold your property in there possession.
You better know who you are dealing with and trust them, like you know them.

Actually that is why I left my employer of 3 years one evening and without having saved a dollar to start my own business, the next morning at 9AM I was incorporating and insuring my own 1 man small business. Started making phone calls for meetings with customers who knew me well, who knew that for the sake of fidelity to them and keeping a promise to them on more than one occasion, without being paid because my old boss didn't want to possibly have to pay me overtime (which he usually had to anyway), I returned repaired equipment to them on my own time because they needed it and it was ready.
I started my 4th year in business July 1st.
I don't advertise, at all, strictly referral.
Another note: the do it yourself so you know it's done right, yeah-I get that too.

Doing it yourself is a lot more than, knowing it’s done right. You save yourself in a lot of areas. 1- Quality 2- money 3 - Last, but most importantly = GRIEF. I try to do everything I possibly can, myself. Regardless of my own personal skills, knowledge or experience. Today, more than ever. It’s easy to teach yourself. You just have to be willing. If you’re not, you set yourself up to be disappointed, taken advantage of or paying more than you should.
I have a 1950 Chevy that needs painted, I never painted a car a day in my life. I’d rather do it myself and settle with a few little flaws. Than pay 15 grand to have a car painted and me be disappointed. If people’s labor was more reasonable today, it might be different. But, people today try to hit the jackpot off each little job they acquire. That’s not how small business works.
