I had bent pushrods that sounded like that... they were tapping the cylinder head where they penetrate the head and had visible marks on the pushrods at the contact points. This happened after a break in of a re-built 440. I ran the engine with the old gas in the tank(dumb) and after it cooled some of the valves stuck from the varnish from the old gas. The next startup resulted in slightly bent pushrods...not enough to have a miss, but enough to contact the head. How old was the gas in the tank?
