Name the sound!?!?

I had bent pushrods that sounded like that... they were tapping the cylinder head where they penetrate the head and had visible marks on the pushrods at the contact points. This happened after a break in of a re-built 440. I ran the engine with the old gas in the tank(dumb) and after it cooled some of the valves stuck from the varnish from the old gas. The next startup resulted in slightly bent pushrods...not enough to have a miss, but enough to contact the head. How old was the gas in the tank?

It sounds like a lifter with not enough pre-load.
I believe your oil pressure is probably a bit on the low side for a new engine.

Fresh fuel.

Doug's headers require there specific gaskets. To me, it sounds more like an exhaust leak than valvetrain noise. I had the same problem when I replaced one of my Doug's header gaskets with a factory style one. 440'

Did you bevel the header flange for the ridge that the 452 head has?

I could hear a exhaust leak at idle but through the recording couldn't hear anything off idle.

While you're there getcha a pair of Remflex gaskets. They run about $30-$40 a pair and you have to be careful not to bend or drop them when intalling, but they are the absolute best sealing gasket on the market.
BTW....which cam are you using? Fast-ramp profiles are clackity, some guys use lots of lifter preload to hush them some.

I agree with Steve on the oil pressure. Does it come up above 45 psi at higher rpm? The old rule of thumb is 10 psi for every 1000 rpm but I like mine to idle with at least 30-40 and run around 60 at cruise. 25 at idle is usually ok so long as there is some flow going to the top....

Took a closer look at oil pressure. Idles at 50. When warm it idles 25 and snaps right back to 50 cruising. I put a long oil filter on it after break-in, it had a short one from the builder. Can that make a difference?

Are you gonna remove the headers for a closer inspection ?
Yes. I know they’re leaking because I have soot on the underside of the hood. I just couldn’t figure out why after changing them out to Percy’s layered gaskets.

Nope.... filter won't....or should not make a difference.
