The Blame Game

Remind me to get my airbags & my ABS tested on my 70 Cuda.... uhhh.... Yeah, right...

Whatever happened to personal responsibly.

I've driven those same roads at the same hour, in a car with less power with T-bars and leaf springs still driving fast and made it out unscathed. He was speeding and lost control, it was clearly the driver in this case.

Sure the car was modified, but the as far as DMV requirements are concerned I think it only has to meet 1970 standards.
I got stopped for no seat belts in my 56 Desoto Wagon. I'm still not sure actually why because 1970 was the first year for shoulder harness. Anyway the local cop like to have had a conniption fit when he saw no lap belts. After holding me up for 20 minutes with my license, registration, and insurance card in his car, he came back up to my window and handed everything back. His only words were "Get the hell out of here "

over here in australia we have to meet a standard when a car is modified and need engineering reports on the work carried out such as brakes ,chassis work ,safety harnesses, larger rims & tyres modified diff etc they also do a lane change test once completed . no such thing as air bags in a car this old as the crumble zone of the car wouldn't work with air bags

The car is 50 years old. Ride or drive at your own peril. Everyone sues everybody for everything now days. No such thing as personal responsibility any more...

In california , you are not required to retrofit seatbelts into cars that did not come with them, unless you are carrying children. Or if you are taking a drivers test. I had to put belts into my moms daily driver 63 impala before a driving tester would even get in it.
A 70 cuda would have to have lap belts at a minimum, and probably a shoulder harness too. I haven't seen the reference that said the car had no belts at all. If it did have belts that weren't used, thats hardly the builders fault.
If an older car that is not required to have belts HAS them installed, they must be used. I have several cars with no belts, but that is my decision.

The funny thing is, technically, a 3"belt five or six point harness is not d.o.t. legal, since it is not oem, but a 60 year old skinny, raggedy-*** old sun faded and dried out lap belt is perfectly fine.

try running a trim shop these days every seat has an air bag in it so who's liable if it doesn't work correctly

Frettimg over safery features in antique cars
It can only go so far.

Seems like silliness gone to seed.

I will say that in the clash of two 1969 cars my lap belt did keep me in the seat.
But the Fairlane and my Coronet were not worth saving back then

Kevin's mistake was letting that kid get behind the wheel of his hotrod...but even cars with 700hp can be cruised and driven safely, I see 'cats and coyotes all the time in traffic, going along fine just like all the other cars. The driver is over 18, licensed in CA, he's responsible, period. Repair-wise, that's between Hart and his insurance company...and depending on his policy they may or may not pay, but as far as injury liability, there are NO laws broken if his car conformed to 1970 safety standards, regardless of any modifications. There just aren't laws here dealing with this stuff, yet, and I emphasize 'yet' because of this case being so high-profile.
(So a modified car has never been wrecked, causing damage, injury or worse?...see post #4!)

I have a 2019 Hellcat, 717 hp. I have to be careful it can break traction when the supercharger kicks in and if you are an experienced driver you can easily lose control of the car. I’ve read on other forums of guys, when they first get them, wreak them in the first couple of weeks.

Does/Did the car have seat belts in it? If not, someone is going to get SMOKED!!!
Not sure if it had belts or not but a 1970 E body vehicle should have come with a lap and a shoulder belt.....and they were independent of each other.

Lots of wrecked new hellcats. Now take away traction control, and put that power in a car almost 1200lbs lighter. (That cuda was almost all carbon fiber). Recipe for disaster.
Edit:
Oh, and then put a fool who has probably never driven a car with a real 400 hp, behind the wheel. Just f-ing brilliant!

This was the same when the first Vipers hit the road. Some were even wrecked by employees at the dealership. Also for the first few years most were wrecked within 20 miles of home. One has to warn up the tires on them before any aggressive driving.
