After getting a good look at the partial VIN stamp on my engine, I took some photos. Please tell me if you think this stamp looks legit or not. I'm skeptical. Car is a 70 Road Runner with 383. THanks.

check out this link, on the left scroll down to engine compartment, it shows pics of correct vins and spacing ect.
the one you posted looks a bit off to me

What is the casting date on the block and what is the build date of your RR?

hard to tell from underneath on the floor but looks like either 8-8-70? or 6-8-70. Build date is Feb 70 so guess that sums it up. Want to throw up right now.

I've seen some pretty sloppy VIN stamps and from that pic this one looks legit to me.

Thanks for your feedback Meep-Meep. I've heard about many variations on VIN stamps, but I guess the casting date trumps all?? Could it maybe be a replacement block and the dealer stamped it to match the VIN??

could be a replacement eng but i didnt think the dealer was allowed to vin stamp.

I read somewhere that they were supposed to but usually it didn't happen.

I agree with meep meep. Lots of vins were hand stamped and sloppy. If your block casting date and assembly date are in line with your car build date, I wouldn't worry about it. Frank Badalson told me that restamped vins are normally too perfect. I think yours is legit.

...I see no issue either. My 69 has some extra tool larks too, and it was certified as legit when had similar concerns.

From what I know the VIN wasn't restamped by just anyone. Perhaps the dealer called in a factory rep? Some replacements might have not been stamped at all but I don't know the rules on that.

Can't be certain, but it probably is...that stamping doesn't give any special info, just that the engine was in a '69 car from the St.Louis plant. Last six digits should match dash VIN if original.

I think it depends on which plant, which day, and who was doing the stamp. My lynch road assy 69 stamp is absolutely beautiful, and legit, but that doesn't mean sloppy isn't legit. Block casting date months after assy date, is much more telling.

Did you take a picture of a picture on a computer screen?

Anytime you have VINs in question you need to clean the area chemically, no abrasives. Take a good straight on picture of that. Then, compare other VINs from the same build range and factory.

Lining up casting dates and production dates is also important as mentioned.

Not sure on all engines but there’s stamped numbers down on the pan rail on these engines. That will have the part number, plant, plus a 10k day calendar date. If that date, the casting date, and assembly date all line up with the build date to VIN sequence I would call it good.

VIN looks okay to me. I think G is St. Louis plant in 69.

Another point is the original fly cut pad will show the tooling marks. This is a picture of an unadulterated '70 440 block. When an unscrupulous sort grinds down the pad to erase a previous number, they rarely set the block up in a Bridgeport to recreate those marks before re-stamping it.

I saw first hand many years ago how our Forensic Scientists can determine if a block has been re-stamped. The impressions of a stamping go quite deep into the casting. Some vehicles used in crimes here were investigated, and I saw some results of the work. If someone really wanted to find the truth, they can...but at what price?
