I had gotten my restoration car ready to go and get a quarter panel replaced when the rear end went out. It has the #2070741 and 308AAPW on the case. It has a tag on the case with 2.94 which is the ratio I believe. Can I replace this with one that has a sure grip. After reading other posts, is there much difference between the 2.94 and the 3.25 gears. Where is a safe place to get the gears to repair. I have not been in a rear end so not sure what I am getting into. On the car the engine (318) and tranny have been rebuilt and now the rear end went out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

With no experience under your belt, the easiest path for you would be to purchase a complete differential assembly equipped with 3.23:1 gears and a Sure Grip. Any 741, 742, or 489 casting will pop right in. U-joint size should be considered and speedometer drive gear will require changing to correct read out. Don't forget axle shaft grease seals and repack axle bearings while out. Shaft end play will also need to be set properly.

This is when a factory service manual comes in handy. As far as the difference between the 2.94 and 3.23 you will see some change, mostly while highway driving.Still, worth doing just for the installation of a sure-grip.

As a note probably would not buy from a one post wonder.. Look for people with Gold status or someone with a crapload of posts... These people are good people.

Going from a 2.94 to a 3.23 is a 10% change and you can do the same thing by going to a tires that's....10% taller. For example, if using a 25" tall tire, a 27.5" tall tire will do it but you still won't have a SureGrip. You say your rear end went out, right. Can you tell us what it did?

I was driving down the road and the car felt like it started to jump or bounce. I put it up on jacks and started slow and the drive wheel turned correctly and the other tire would go forward and then stop and go backwards, like a gear got caught. There was no noise like any grinding or any thing else. Both tires spin freely by hand.

Sounds like it's time to pull the chunk. Drop the drive shaft, pull off the drums and pull out the axles. Then the chunk will come out. Be careful, that pig weighs about 80 lbs. Pay attention to the axle adjuster....should be on the right side. There's a keeper that's under the nut. All the axle nuts are 9/16'ths and so are all the nuts on the 3rd member.

That was my next thing. Thanks for the warning on weight. I like to see what is wrong or broken before doing more. Besides I like to take things apart.(ha) I will get it out.

Welcome.
A 3.23 would be a good choice.
Let us know how it turns out.
