Sprayed the base coat on my 74 Charger 4th of July weedend. Went to spray clear coat and had the wrong hardner. Four days later sanded base coat then sprayed clear coat. Using PPG DBI and 2002 clear. Did not turn out right. Reread sheet and I should have sprayed another base coat before the clear. Talked to a guy that has a paint shop. He said to sand all the clear off. I did. He came buy to look said there was more clear that needed sanding. He then said for me not to sand any more but spray two coats of a high build 2k primer and sand 600 wet. Than it would be ready for base coat clear coat. It's been a week since I sprayed the 2k primer. Just got it sanded. Don't I need a prime coat now before the base coat?

Never used the 2k but you should have got a sheet telling you what all it goes with.....

I put a primer/sealer down first then the base coat on the 4th of July then the clear and that clear coat is where I messed up. I have never used a 2K either. I would think I would need a primer now and base and then clear, but then that guy said no.

Ok your original post doesn't make sense because you said you sprayed 2k primer after you sanded off the bad clear. Why are you asking if you need primer if you say you sprayed the 2k primer ? And no you don't need a sealer. A sealer will help things be uniform but so will a uniform coat of primer. Your P sheets say what you need, dry times,, sand times and what you can spray over. Follow them. I am very familiar with PPG if you need help.

The 2K was Omni which is PPG. Because I sprayed the 2K more than a week ago and it will be a few more days before I spray the base I thought I would need another prime coat. I have the sheet on the Omni 2K but it is not clear to me what to do next

agree with above........

but let me get this straight......

you sanded base because it sat too long without clear, (curious what color?)

I assume your problem is sand scratches in the base visible through the clear?

if this is the case.....actually, you didn't need to sand the clear off. You should have been able to sand the clear with 600 or 800 and re-base and clear right over that

but is sounds like you sanded through the clear almost removing it? wow, that is a lot of unnecessary work

you're gonna want to resand the primer just prior to paint just to "open" it up "fresh"...... a light scratch with a red scotch pad would work fine at that point..... any bare metal would need a lil primer on it........... a sealer coat is an option

I usually sand my base with 800 a time or two during application just to keep it smooth and nib free

I waited more than 24 hours to spray the clear. The sheet said when that happpens to sand the base and spray the base again. I only sanded the base. When I buffed the clear it didn't look right. The color is Seinna which is a copper. Thanks for all the info. Should have asked here in the first place.

You’re also getting a lot of build. Hopefully you don’t run into any issues with it after it’s done.

MP182 says you can put base coat on it. @eldubb440 has you all squared away.

I've read all the post and comments and eldubb440 stated to open the paint up with a great scratch using a red scotchbrite. That is not always necessary on previously sanded primer and for a final scratch I'd use a grey Scotchbrite. If your paint has metallic in it which I imagine Copper color would, if you sand between coats to keep the dirt nips off you have to recoat that spot with more base. Here's the issue with that, if your not a great painter you could run into blotchy spots if you don't know how to shoot just a small area. I'd suggest don't touch the base if you absolutely don't have to. Sanding base is a horrible idea. And yes PPG base requires sanding OR a recoat after 24 hrs so you did that right. Altho you could've just shot another basecoat on without sanding. And with PPG if for whatever reason you need to recoat over the clear, say you wet sand and go thru the clear, there are steps to follow or you will get lifting of the clear. Like I said if you need help let me know, I can give you the do's and donts with PPG paint. This stuff is expensive and you don't want to keep respraying it.
