The bezel is attached to the instrument cluster with screws from the back. The visible screws you see are what attach the cluster to the dash.
The entire unit must be removed in order to separate the cluster from the bezel.

It's really not as daunting a task as it sounds. Just take your time, do not lose your patience and take deep breath time outs when necessary!
I've done exactly what you're proposing to tackle. I've had my instrument cluster in and out of the car countless times. Honestly, getting it re-installed takes much longer. I can have a cluster out and on a bench in twenty minutes. Takes about fourty five to get back in.

I have a thread on the restoration of my cluster in the "Interior" topic listings.

thanks.. I'll check it out..

I looked it over and there is some great info .. I'll give it a shot before I put the car away.... thanks again

I had to drop the steering column to get mine out and back in. Pulling the steering wheel off helped too. Also had to remove the radio bezel.
Then it is just a matter of pulling it out far enough to unplug the speedo cable and electrical plugs. The worse thing for me was getting the top right bolt out of the steering column plate. You need the whole cluster out to work on the gauges. Working on the bench is much easier than standing on your head.

There are 6 screws that mount the cluster to the dash frame. As for the steering column, I believe three bolts on the floor plate and 3 on the upper column to dash. There is also a plastic cover under the steering column with 4 screws. Just drop it down, you don't have to remove it.
