I recently installed electric fans on my 65 Coronet, then Friday my voltage regulator went out. It had been acting up but went haywire this time. My question is I am installing a Power master 17509 75-85 amp alternator that I have had for a while just setting around and a new Electronic voltage regulator. I looked the alternator up on there website and it had a instruction sheet for it since it is a dual field alternator going on a 65. It shows to just hook up the field wire to either field terminal then ground the other field terminal to the alternator housing. I have never seen this before, is it common practice. I don't want to fry anything.

Only if you use a replacement electronic VR that is for 1 field wire. A Wells 706 is a electronic replacement for the old points style.Mopar's electronic VR is grounded internal. They do make a wire harness for Mopar's to make the switch.
Be careful using the PowerMaster if it is a 100 amp and you are using factory 1965 wiring. You may have a failure at the bulkhead connection, melted wires, etc. The old 1960's alts had about 40 amps max.

I use a VR706 with that PowerMaster on my 66. Works great. I also have bypassed all my bulkhead wiring and run this like a NASCAR vehicle with switches on my dash.

the alternator is either a 75 or 85 amp unit. I have seen it listed as both. the regulator actually came in today. it is the 35-300 that I seen someone suggest on here. it looks like the old points style that took off. it does have a rebuilt square back parts store alternator on it now and the extra field wire is not grounded.

I put the regulator on so I could pull it out of the garage. it still has the unknown amp alternator on it. idling it is right at 12.8 at the battery. if I rev it up it will go up to 14.3. I will change the alternator tomorrow but I may add a 8 gauge wire from the alternator to the battery to see if that helps. also the extra field wire is not grounded. will this make a difference. I normally run a 1 wire alternator and that's lookin like a good idea right now. this is also with the fans off still. they are on a thermostat switch.
