i need to replace the tires and wheels on my 78 magnum , what are the largest tires and wheels i can put on it without modifying the car or causing problems Thanks ,

275/60/15 on the rear fit with plenty of room. Or if you are thinking modern a wheel 17-18 inch about 8-10 inches wide. Not sure on tire size with those rims.Maybe a 45 sidewall so they don't look like rubber bands on a rim.
Front wheels 8 inches easy and a 225 to 245 60 should clear for travel and turning. I've had 2 of those body styles and they have lots of room.

Thanks,i am also wondering about backspacing , i have never delt with these issues , i like a car that handles well, cornering and braking roadholding ,

Most factory wheels in the 7'' wide had a backspace of 4 1/4''. You can get away with 4 1/2''. Maybe up to 5'' before contact with the tire on the leaf spring. The other thing to watch out for is front upper ball joint clearance with 15'' wheels when you get a deeper back space. 16'' wheels or more are ok but then you have to watch for clearance at the outer tie rod. Fun stuff.
