so.. just hit the 500 mile mark on the new 440. runs great, runs cool(195 )around town,on open road if i run 60 mph or over for 10- 15 miles, then heats up to - 205 - 207 area. doesnt matter if ac is on or not, can back it down to 2700/2800 rpms and it drops back to 195. at 60 mph shows 3100 rpms, everything in new, including 26" 3 core radiator, fan shroud in in place, new fan clutch etc.... is this normal ?? anything I can do to help cool engine for highway driving ? I added some wetter water, no difference.
I have 3:55 gears, which are not ideal for highway, but great for around town and launches.

any thoughts ?

thinking about adding an overdrive unit.. just gotta save up some $$$

Maybe the torque convertor is adding a little heat as the RPM's rise on the highway-just a wild guess.

never thought of that , not sure of stall speed, i know its not the stock one, I just dont remember what i put in it , thinking 2200 +/-

Does your lower hose have a spring in it to prevent collapsing from suction side of pump which creates less flow? Might also be fan clutch disengaging at that speed and less airflow because of it.

What's total timing at 3000,timing can cause this
problem at those continuous RPMs

yes check for a collapsing lower hose. Usually on the highway it heats up is because of poor air flow through the radiator. How far is your fan into the fan shroud, it should be half in the shroud half out. If it is to close to the rad it will block the air flow.

i think the timing is off a little, thinking distributor may need to be re-curved, I get a little valve ping over 3000 under acceleration

I'd back the distributor down to get rid of the ping then test on the highway

...if you can still afford it :)

Do you have a clutch fan?

yes, I have a clutch fan, still trying to find a balnce on the dist. timing,, hard to start or more power

I checked the lower hose. no spring, so will start there

Check your rad cap, if it has good pressure the hose should not collapse, then as said timing, lean fuel, ad a auxiliary trans cooler. Fan clutch shouldn't make any difference at speed.

i already have an aux trans cooler on it, good pressure at cap

How do you know it's rich cruising at speed, I bet it's lean. What carb is on it?
