Is there any difference between a 4 speed and automatic as far as the drive shaft is concerned? Would a 4 speed and an automatic take the same length drive shaft?

Not sure if there is any difference in diameter or strength from the factory but length was the same. I swapped from a 727 to a 833 and used the same drive shaft.
If you have a two piece shaft with a rubber isolator you should change it out for either transmission.

If it is a 440-6 or a Hemi there will be a difference, because of the Dana 60, that driveshaft needs to be 1.14" shorter.

I used the same shaft with both a 727 and a four speed in my '70.
