Talladega or Bust - 1970 Super Bird Cleanup

Slept in the parking lot of the Gilmore a week ago Saturday night (Oct 5th). Pouring rain, Gary assured me there were plugs on the light posts so we waited for the lights to come on and plugged in a ceramic heater. As soon as the last car left from a dinner function, around 9:30 PM, the lights went out and so did the power so we had to revert to the ice fishing gear! Sunday talking with a couple of volunteers that were cleaning cars, they had seen the Bird in the trailer when they left for home on Saturday and thought the museum was getting a Bird to go under the neon sign beside Justins GTX.

that's not a bad idea with a winch near the bed! getting cold here it might help getting the pajamas off!

A bit of the Gilmore, what a complex. Lighting is terrible to get a good photo though. Cars are lite up nice, but no matter what angle you try to shoot at there's a light pointing at the camera.

Wayne, you are a consummate practical joker.

Where is Abe's other hand? No wonder she's smiling.

Thanks for the photos. Wish I could visit there sometime.

Sunday to Dega at 6:30AM, in the rain at times, with a police escort the back way into the track. Race made it to the end of the first stage just as it started to rain. Most of us bugged out during the rain delay to head home or in our case back to Alexander City for one more night in our filthy Days Inn Suite.

Winding our way through Eleanor Roosevelt State Park in Georgia, on our run from Atlanta Motor Speedway to Alexander City! Was a fun drive for me, Eric in his Daytona and his chase crew... not so much for Leah chasing us all in the truck / trailer. She should have lead the way, she had the NAV!

Really the only way I can conclude this thread. If you're not on FB you should be, it's a great resource when used CORRECTLY and not for bathroom pictures ! LOL

Someone let me know if the link works, I have no way of telling because it will always work for me and FB changed where you use to be able to grab a "link" address from.

Wayne, the link works fine for me and thanks for your efforts and documentation of the event. I enjoyed the chance to talk with you on Friday evening and then Saturday was crazy busy as well as you know.

Hope that the event met your expectations and from the chronicle that you have compiled, it will be memories that you and your wife can cherish for many more years.

Again thanks for all of your efforts and for all of your insight here on this forum.

Thanks Richard ! It was so great finally putting a face and a handshake to a guy that helps so many here as well. Was a neat but tiring 13 days for us, but WELL worth the experience and memories... and friendships made!

Richard is good people for sure! Cool dude to deal with! Usually run into him every year at Carlisle at the parts tent.

I've read the thread over the last few days as time allowed.

You do great work and it looked like you had an awesome time!

I guess the old girl wanted to go to Georgia/Alabama as bad as I did last October, as she kept her continence the entire time. It had a slight power steering leak before loading and I'd added sealer and fluid and did a couple of drives around town. Seemed after things went round and round a bit it stopped leaking. Never dripped once during the 2 week trip South, nor on the drive from Atlanta Georgia to Alexander City Alabama, or to the track, Wellborns, etc and not a drip in the trailer either when we got home. Parked in the same spot for exactly 4 months since I last moved her on Dec 23rd and she let go... every drop. **** happens after 50 ! Guess I'd better pencil in some steering box seal work.

Tells me she doesn't want to sit around. Make her go around and around again. Actually I had one seal start leaking on mine about 5 years ago and I bought a seal kit for the sector. We cleaned everything up, found where it was coming from and were able replace it in the car.

Picked up another set of PLYMOUTH rear tail panel letters. They were advertised as '66 hood letters, but the M has even attach pegs, not offset like a '66 should. I'd only bought them for wall "art", but other than the H (and I have a spare good one) they are mint chrome wise. Gonna polish them up and repaint the black inset and swap them for the OE set on the car, if they turn out better than what I have.

Some of my used Paypal money arrived yesterday. Priority/Express post is taking over a month, even over short distances. A rare piece of history, a bit tattered but fully functional. Thanks Tom..
