I have a rattle in the 727 transmission in my '73 Charger at idle. It seams to go away at around 850 rpm. I hear nothing while driving and the transmission shifts fine. The fluid color look and smell like the day I put it in. I'm not 100% sure the dip stick level is correct so would too much or too little fluid cause this? What should I check?

My long term plan is convert to a 5 speed manual, so as long as it won't die in the next year, I'm not too concern about it. I just don't want to put me on the side of the road.

Just a thought. Check your torque converter to flex plat bolts. Seen it several times.

I think the torque converter has gone bad. According to my dad, it is the stock converter that originally came with the car. Here why I think that it's the torque converter. Tell me if you agree:
  1. The noise is only heard in park, reverse, and drive. Not in neutral.
  2. Idle is erratic in drive (+/-50 rpms) and smooth (+/- 10 rpms) in neutral.
  3. The car is sluggish and jerky taking off until about 1300 rpm, about the factory stall speed, then is smooths out a little.
  4. There's a vibrate at speed that is related to load placed on the engine. No vibration in neutral at speed.
  5. It's old as heck.
