Hi all,
I'm not crazy! I want to pull my 440 and put a 318 in it.

why you will ask... here is why:
Because of life and children, I don't have much time to work on the car, so to avoid not being able to drive the car like this year where I just started driving it a few weeks ago after redoing all the electric parts and freshing up the interior.

I live overseas in Switzerland and here is difficult to come by a 440 in any stage of conservation, but I've a few 318 laying around.

so the idea is to pull the 440 and put the 318, so I can drive around when the snow is gone next year, and have time to rebuild the 440 without stressing myself.

Car is a 1967 GTX 4 speed.

I've made a list of things I think I'll need:
- flywheel
- bell housing
- Schumacher motor mounts
- fabricate a connector for the exhaust manifold

am I missing something?

thanks!

Maybe a better alternative would be finding a 383 around? A lot more common than the 440, and even in 2 barrel form would save ya swapping all the big to small block stuff. Just n option to think about.

You don't need expensive schumacher motor mounts, just stock SB mounts will work.

Don't forget about the exhaust, wiring, and hose routing.

A 383 or another 440 would be the best way to go. Direct bolt in.

You will waste more time converting to a small block than just pulling the 440 and building it. To me, you having some 318's laying around means they may need some attention too and you also said you have started driving the car after the wiring repairs. I'm sure I have most everything you need do the swap, but I personally think it's a waste of resources. (MONEY).

Find a well running rusted out new yorker and use that engine.

Or tarp it till life gets easier.

Ive done that with my cars till cash and time is available

Once you have a 318 in it, the chances of building the 440 and completing the work required to drive the car diminishes, and the time it takes expands.
Put the time, effort, and money into finishing the 440, or at least put a big block in. That should cost less and save time.
Besides, putting a 318 in a 67 GTX 4 speed is like having a dragon and pulling all of its teeth.

Your Mopar license is hereby revoked. You will ship your GTX here to my, er I mean the, impound yard.
You will be issued a 4cylinder Mustang to drive instead.
May God have mercy on your soul.

Oh and... he black stripes the street just standing on the gas from a 30 mph roll...

One more of the survivor 67 GTX dusting a Vette...

My humble opinion, you'll probably go nuts trying the conversion. Have you looked for a 383?

Well if needed I have the 318 mounts you should need

Pilot bushing in crank. center bellhousing to crank. Don't known about finding a 383 or a RB in Switzerland but a whole lot less work. You would still need to do both things I posted.

A 67 has the 11" clutch & cast iron bell housing... So yes you will need a complete bell housing & clutch assy, but since it will have an 18 spline trans the clutch can't be a normal 23 spline small block clutch....

I tend to agree with everyone here, stick with a big block, it's gonna be easier & once the big block comes out it'll be hard to get it back in the car....

Spend your $$$ rebuilding the 440....

What does he think it will cost to replace every thing for the radiator to the drive shaft?

It makes absolutely no sense to do that if it were permanent. Even less so, for a temporary fix.

Wow a lot of feedback, thanks for the replies!

I'll give up the crazy idea, and keep the 440 in it.

as I said I live in Swizerland, difficult to get "local" parts. I'm always looking around for blocks or parts reasonable priced, so I don't have to ship from the US to here.

I'm not in the US, even rusted out Mopars are hard to find or cost a bunch of money...
