I've done it off and on since the 70's. Why throw it away when you can go to the 'dump' (scrap yard) and get paid for it! Before I had a trailer, I was giving away parted out cars but once that trailer was mine, that quit happening! I haven't checked prices here lately but when the 'cruisers for scrap' picks up in the neighborhood, I'll call to check. And how much weight do ya have on that trailer lol

lol it was a Bit heavy..to be honest ( wink )
normally i would have used the other trailer but i had a lot of small debris crap to remove.
another happy customer tho.
o and this came off the same job,48 packard straight 8
good drivetrain rotted body.
tech tip for anyone ever using a packard straight 8 in a rat rod,
the 318 2 bbl carter carbs bolt right on and are tons better than the factory setup.

Folks must be holding onto scrap steel due to the price being so low.
Many steel mills now use only scrap steel. When the price is low they buy all they can and process it then store it.
When the price of steel goes up they are set to make a nice profit.

Last time I checked (last month) was $3.50 per 100#.

Lowest I've seen in a decade.

Could have used a few parts off that Craftsman rider.

I've got a pickup bed full of scrap waiting.

...and waiting.....and waiting.

At first I thought the the sign in the windshield was a for sale sign.

Last I heard you have to use some fresh ore and add the scrap to it. Has the technology advanced to where you can make good steel using scrap only?

I never bid against the scrappers. Since we don't compete, it's easier to get along. When they aren't around, I buy coffee cans of brass for $2 each and when they get a pile, they are inclined to sell me a treasure out of it.

One was a guy in his 80's. He had 20,000 acres of wheat, but he still bought and hauled scrap. I knew his nephew, so we stated BS'ing at auctions.
This sale was over, everybody gone as I was rolling out, pickup and trailer packed. I was dirty, tired, and hungry and there he was, loading steel. Dang. So I stopped and we loaded together. At the bottom of the pile, there were three rifle barrels.
"You like that stuff, don't you?" he asked. Oh yeah, who doesn't? "Three dollars". So I bought them. The first looked like an aftermarket 243 that may have been shortened, but no markings, never did figure out what it was. The second was a new old stock 1917 Eddystone that brought pretty good money, but the last, still wrapped in cosmoline and cloth, was a 30 cal High Standard machine gun barrel. They have twice the rifling and I was told they fit the O3. I sold that for over $300.

Hey, The economy's boomin, why not drain your own swamp of junk?
Funny how the banner ad above is for junk removal!

In Youngstown, Ohio we called it re-fried rust.

I have always collected Martha Stewart's boulevard collection for years.
I still haul 4 ton loads almost monthly.
Price is not the greatest right now but it finances my automotive addiction and does not take from the family funds.
My boss sends me places for deliveries and such so I pickup a load on the way back.
Some people even call me to haul their junk. I just cleaned out a garage for 40 bucks and after I sold all the valuables I made an extra $300. Not bad for a half hour cleanup and barely any scrap metal.

I’ve been junkin’ since I was I junior high. They call it “recycling” now.

Anyone know the currant pound price of old brass- copper radiator ( 1956) ? What would be considered a good price? .........................MO

When I started filling that truck bed about 4 years ago, scrap was $6.50 per 100#.

Guess I should have taken it then.

The last time I went before that it was $12!

Wow I have about 20,000 pounds of junk cars behind the shop, 15 cars, and god knows how many parts, might be time to clean out. You know the saying I’ll use that someday, we’ll thats come and gone at my age

So, at my local price (which is 2-3 weeks old) of 3.50, if my math is correct, that's $70 per ton.

Even if it's gone up to $83 as in the OP, still not worth that $13 per ton to drag it over.

It was $4.75 a few months ago which is the highest I've seen it in years.

Using ore would require a smelter.
In the recycling process the metal is shredded and then melted in an electric arc furnace. The melted steel is analyzed in the lab and depending on the type of product being made, lets say steel, if they want steel with a high chromium content they would add chromium to the steel.
Its amazing how you see these mills and there is no smoke coming from them.
