I'm not sure about your state but here in Washington State, any electrical work done without an electrical work permit and inspection can come back and bite you at sales time or if you get caught. It can also nullify your homeowner's insurance if they want to get picky.

In NJ, a homeowner can do his own electrical work in a SINGLE family home, but he has to pull a permit and have it pass inspection (up to code).

Or, when disaster strikes, and it was discovered there was electrical issues.....don't get upset when the Insurance people train their focus on the lack of a permit or unqualified work undertaken.
