who pays 10k for a paint job

Oh, I know it's possible. I just question the value of it. For example, the car I linked to above on ebay, a 70 RR, 440/6, 4 speed. The listing claims there is $170k invested in the restoration of the car. Who in his right mind puts that kind of money in a car that on a good day can maybe get half that? Unless, he has money to burn. I'm not in that league so find it hard to relate to.

This hobby is done with the heart, not the brain. It takes about 3/4-2 million to build a Riddler winner these days. The cars then disappear. Few are ever used or seen out in the public. How much money ya think it took Dave to build that 4-door e-body?

Yeah, I know how much though it's not my place to say, other than to say it's a chunk....& the hours broke the clock.

Yeah, when you make decisions with the heart, whether it be cars or women, it can be very costly !!!!!!!

I can do 10 cars with a fender replacement and blend doors in a day.maybe a few with bumper repairs prep and paint . and come out with 20 to 25 grand . as apposed to one car that sits for 3 months for 10 gs. back in the 90s a good paint job for a classic car was 10 grand.. now a days thats very cheap..

I am doing one for a friend. He went out to the hot rod institute here local. They quoted him 30 K. The car is very straight needs no replacement panels. I told him to buy the products and I will help with what little body work it needs and shoot it. I not a pro but I have decent equipment and have painted quite a few in my time.

That being said I also know the hours that those paint jobs require. And I am not saying my paint job would compare in quality but it will be decent.

Just read that and yes it is spot on. All about labor...also here in Cali you add on the tree hugger tax. Lolol

I couldn't do it, when it comes time to sell ( probably this spring unfortunately) I'd never get the 10,000 back in resale value, probably gonna be in the 14 range, so I wrapped it. $800 worth of material, took about hour per panel, turned out awesome!

Once I get to that point, I may be crazy enough to pull it all apart and do as much prep work myself. Finishing is what the car will be judged by and "value" attributed to despite all the upgrades underneath. Not sayin' it has to be top of the line but to go through everything only to come up short at the end wouldn't sit right with me.

some places here, will do paint and body at a large discount, for cash. How they handle the reporting on their end, is none of my business

I will need a paint job in the spring. I'm going to do the breakdown and sand down with my nephew who just retired. (90% him..10% me). We can prime it at his place but the final sanding and paint will be a pro. Even though I don't want a show paint job, I'm still worried about the cost, as 10k is to much. Materials I know are crazy, let alone the labor involved. I'm scouting around now for a shop or a hired gun :). Anyone know of one in the WNY area let me know.

I would have to estimate 700 hours to do a classic car paint job. That's 7000 right there. No surprises. Then at least 3000 to 3500 for supplies.
700 hours= 4-1/2 months really? I can go fishing now for 3 months
$3000-$3500 supplies? All the paint paper tape I might have $600 tops

If you use good paint PPG you will have 1500 in paint hardener and clear unless is has red in the mix. Then even more $ I painted a chevelle blue using PPG paint and concept clear. Cost right at 1800 for products.
