who pays 10k for a paint job

i had about 2500.00 in supplies in a base clear system, sure if you do a single stage it will be alot cheaper and i think less prep because you can buff the color and make it look good but not as nice as a base clear that can't be cheated by color sanding,(well not much anyway) just my opinion.

If you use good paint PPG you will have 1500 in paint hardener and clear unless is has red in the mix. Then even more $ I painted a chevelle blue using PPG paint and concept clear. Cost right at 1800 for products.

Add another grand for body filler, glazing putty, sand paper, high build urethane primer, sealer, tape, paper, and buffing and cutting supplies. 3 grand plus in materials, or more depending on the color chosen.

700 hours= 4-1/2 months really? I can go fishing now for 3 months
$3000-$3500 supplies? All the paint paper tape I might have $600 tops
I was quoted 3000 for materials at 6 different shops, including maaco. Is that a decent 2 stage for $600? If so, you now have a business partner in MN, let's make some money selling to shops:)

No way in hell can you buy quality paint products for a car job for 600.

3000 is about right.

If you only have 600 bucks in epoxy primer,2K primer, filler, all the sandpaper, base coat, and clear coat we are not comparing apples to apples. I admitted to being out of it on the labor but the materials I'm dead on if not still light on the price.

Hell a gallon of B5 blue from PPG costs me $562. With a gallon of reducer it will be over 600 for just the paint.

I’m doing a 71 Dart for a guy right now.
I have over 3000 in material.
That’s using “budget” SPI primers and clear. Epoxy primer, high build 2K and their universal clear.
I used DuPont chroma base.

I had 1000 in 1.5 gallons of base and reducer.

Add in masking paper, tape and plastic. Sand paper, gloves, solvents, tack rags, filler, glaze, etc......

You will be very butt hurt if you go into a paint job with wacky expectations.

So far, this customer has around 15,000 in this paint and body. I’ll have another 3000 or so when the weather warms and I finish block and paint the exterior.

Ok here goes, not sure what town you live in. One gallon PPG A1 acrylic enamel silver plus harder plus a gallon of reducer-$241, 2 stage primer-$60 sandpaper, tape, maybe $60, newspaper free. No skim coat! Hate those rounded over edges, just apply primer, water sand, paint with a HVLP gun, done! What do you guys want, the Mona Lisa or a nice paint job like the factory put out for years and years? I stripped car to the metal, two weeks in the evening, metal prep(forgot that was $40) primer, paint. Of course I’m an amateur, what do I know, thought it would be so hard and was a little hesitant at first but said what the heck been painting my cabinets for 35 years how hard can it be. Now on my 4th car through the years with 3 more if I’m around that long. By the way I worked in a mom and pop body-paint shop right out of high school for 3 years (1968) old guy painted in a shed, flies would slip off the paint job.

Yup. Use envirobase daily. With the 520 or 530 clear. Not cheap at all.

Thanks for the lesson.

10k is cheap. I can't believe said that. I've been leaning towards the old single stage paint jobs like from the factry. An overdone paint job on a classic makes a car look cheaper IMO. Mine is base clear. If I had to do It again it would be as close to factory as possible. 30k on paint is ridiculous no matter how much money you have.

I've been using Barry's products(SPI) and they can't be beat. Best customer service in the world.

Barry is a great guy. SPI has a great user forum as well.

I was a Die hard PPG Guy. DPLF and 2021 clear. SPI epoxy sands so nicely compared to DPLF and universal clear is good stuff too.

Yep,I would hardly call SPI products budget... One of the best in the industry actually. By the way the Superbee in my avatar I painted with mid grade Sikkens which was 320 bucks a quart unreduced base.
40 to 100k to get a car done at my shop.

To answer the question of who spends $10,000 on a paint job I would say someone who plans on keeping the car a long time and understands he may never recoup the cost when he sells it.

very few, if any 50 year old cars need just a "paint job"; most need some form of disassembly and major reconstruction. Even cars in "good condition" need some rust repair, stripped to metal, dents fixed, ect. . . paint is just the "tip of the iceberg"

the entire premise of the thread is flawed

Agree totally, “body work” can and will run up the $$$ way more labor intensive. Maybe it should read $10000 in paint or $10000 in body work
