who pays 10k for a paint job

Yep,I would hardly call SPI products budget... One of the best in the industry actually. By the way the Superbee in my avatar I painted with mid grade Sikkens which was 320 bucks a quart unreduced base.
40 to 100k to get a car done at my shop.
“Budget” as in way less expensive than other brand name product lines.

SPI quality is really good

Since this is page 12, I'm not sure if anyone talked about pro body shops overhead. A heated spray booth costs $$$$. Then insurance, workmans comp, electric, gas, shop supplies, employee benefits, on and on.
I understand that yes you can paint you car in the driveway with Rustoleum from Lowes, but would you when building a car that you have at least $30 grand in parts invested in ?

All the overhead is the price of doing business .

I know you know how good of a product it is, I just wanted to make sure everyone one else knows too... sometimes things don't come out right on the computer, sorry.

the op sounds like nobody in business could ever make a honest dollar from him
or even break even
the lights don't turn on for free..

full disclosure, I did not read all 12 pages, however I recently finished painting my 73 Cuda restomod which included all of the metal work, body prep, etc. I can say with confidence that the body work/prep (not any replacement panels) and paint cost me around $3K using relatively inexpensive materials, I can totally see a professional paint job costing $10K without issue.

I guess I should consider myself lucky: $1,400.00 acrylic enamel Bahama Yellow (paint/labor) completed in 13 working days. Of course, this is a foreign country. 1972 factory color was Tawny gold Y9 and a previous owner painted it blue. California car did not require any panel replacement. Photos in order: before paint, paint day, present finish.

Omni line other than the clear less than 2k in materials for each painted in my shop. And less than 20K in each car, not perfect but nice drivers and a real GTX and 70 383 R/T
