I'm installing a 3" exhaust system and have the tailpipes hung where they don't hit anything. I preassembled my h pipe and mufflers out of the car and when I went to match them up to the tailpipes the outlet of the mufflers were about 6" wider than where the tailpipes wanted to hang without interferences. No matter what way I twist the tailpipes....there is no way I can make up that much difference.....and things get ugly quick.

Can someone provide me a measurement from centerline to centerline of their muffler outlet where they attach to the tailpipe. It shouldn't matter if it's a 3" exhaust system or not....I just need to figure out which parts are in the ballpark and which aren't. I suspect I'll need to do some tweaking to the H pipe/muffler assemblies.

Thanks in advance.

Yes they are offset inlet and center outlet....and yes this is actually going into a 67 belvedere. However since I changed the fuel tank to 69 stuff the 69 system "should" work. It's tight with the mini-tub....I have about 3/8" clearance at any given point on the tailpipes. I think I might be paying some penance for not going with a TTI system, but will make it work. I believe they got the angle for the H-pipe too sharp at the back and I may have to cut a sliver out, bend it and reweld. Actually if the mufflers were center in and out....they would just about line up perfectly.

Before getting the cutting wheel out...I was hoping for a reference measurement to make sure I was on track.

Is the h pipe a true H. Or is one end of it closer to each other than the other? That would change the rest of it along the way....

Did a 3"TTI system on my 65 Dodge no problem. They said start by hanging tailpipes first and work forward. Silly question any chance you are putting tailpipes on the wrong side? Picture would help to see what's up.

Just put them where they fit best! I have a 4 inch stainless system.

4mulas - the H is at the front and the pipes run parallel to the back but flare out just before the mufflers. I think the flare out is a bit too aggressive.

Fran - That's the approach I'm taking....back to front. I've installed them as you see them laying on the floor....I don't think it's possible to reverse them as the angle to the muffler would point outward vs. inward.

Hemi - I think I'm going to have to take your approach and do some tweaking. 3 inch is tight....I'm not sure how you fit the 4" system under there. I'm working around all the factory fuel system stuff and a mini-tub with caltrac monoleafs and it gets mighty narrow in the back.

As you can see...my car is on home made stands and only sits about 2 feet off the ground. I think I've been under and out from that thing about a hundred times just getting the exhaust tips, spring hangars and tailpipes situated where they look like they should work. Next step is to start crawling under the car about a hundred more times....just under the floorboard section this time. I went into this system knowing it would not be as easy as a TTI system, but for less than half the price...and stainless....and free shipping....I can deal with the trials and tribulations.

Now if it would just warm up.....it was 8 degrees outside this morning and my garage is not heated.

Being on a lift sure gives a better view.Remember adapters are available to help the angle of the dangle:)

I see what you mean about width between mufflers but bottom picture looks right. Maybe measure width of frame rail where rear of ideally end up. Maybe you need to cut H-pipe some on muffler end? Without making to short to reach headers. After looking at top picture more think you need to trim muffler end of H-pipe, measure twice and cut once. As I said make sure if you cut H-pipe it will reach headers.

Fran....that is a great observation. If I cut back on that angle of the back of the H pipe it should draw the outlets in.

It appears they provided me with plenty of tube to go between the H pipe and header...I'll verify that before starting to do any cutting. Anything I cut can always be added back at the other end too...just in case I have to go too far.

I'll hang the mufflers from the tailpipes and start working toward the front from there.

Thanks for the feedback!

Always like to here the results of posts for help. A pet peeve of mine even if I didn't post advice, is not hearing about results.

I appreciate the help....it's always good to bounce ideas off of others because sometimes you get too far down the rabbit hole to step back and look at alternatives. Usually the simplest solutions are the most elegant ones.

I'm glad I just didn't start hacking away trying to bend things vs just shortening the tangent of the angled pipe. I'll let you know how it comes out....after it warms up a few degrees here.
