This 383 is my first big block. It's overdue for a rebuild and a bit damaged. I'm Thinking why build it when 440s are generally easy to find. So my question is about balance. The 440 I'm looking at is a cast crank stock short block. What do I need to do? ? Cast crank balancer and what else?

A cast crank torque converter or a B&M cast crank flex plate.Unless it's a stick car.

Buy a steel crank for the shortblock and steel crank balancer

Try to find a earlier 440. They're out there. Made a lot of um. Good luck. BTW a there are stroker kits for the 383 that make them a 438. Lighter than a 440 and will really twist up. 383s are very tough and have excellent geometry.

383’s can be easily stroked
Mine was dyno well over 500hp.

What year ish did they make the change?

If the 440 is complete with the cast crank damper, the easiest thing is just get the B&M Offset balance flexplate, or a torque converter with the offset balance weights.

Davidrad, Year-ish id 72-73. I got a 73 440 and it had a cast crank. There were exceptions.
