Seriously, what the hell is Craigslist coming to? I post on craigslist more than anywhere else. So today I posted a couple snow tires on Craigslist, got done posting my last post 45 minutes ago. I put real buyers only and cash in hand, and to text or call me. I got 3 scam text messages already:wtf::elmer:

I always got text scam messages right after posting, when disclosing my phone number. I do the email contact, leave me your number and I'll call you. It's the only way around the text scams.

i gave up on cl,too many scammers and noshows and dreaming lowballers.
i use the fb marketplace now,but still find that a Lot of people will noshow or not follow thru on sales or buys there either.
i do find a lot of deals on the fb too.

Craigslist allowing dealers to spam every category of vehicles, is, in my opinion, one of the main reasons for its downfall. I shouldn't have to scroll through 30 cars that have nothing to do with my search criteria.
And FB has its share of idiots. Wrong car name in the description, one shitty picture, ads in Spanish, price mis direction, ridiculous prices, etc

Remember the good old days when we posted ads in the local advertiser/newspaper! I personally purchased a lot of parts and cars that way.

It’s not just CL. It’s a sign of how much society has degenerated. The scarier part of the text scams is how many people fall for it.

Buying stuff from many reputable places I find I end up on email lists from other outfits trying to sell me **** so some of these places still sell their customer contact information...partly my fault as I setup another email to use to thwart this; but forget to use it when ordering parts sometimes.

"real buyers only" just entices the scammers more !!

Remember the good ol' days when you had to BUY the paper to see the ads. Having to spend that couple bucks discouraged all but real buyers.

I used CL some years ago; but haven't since given all the stories of people getting robbed and worse. I don't want scum-sucks with bad intentions coming to my house. Last time I sold something I had the buyers meet me at a nearby gas station parking lot, I know the owner so he's ok with it, and has surveillance cameras. Anyway, to state the obvious, be wary...

Those scammers are annoying as hell. I just insult their mothers until they call me names and I instantly feel better about life.....

I do miss the days of getting a new auto trader on Thursday mornings. An actual magazine you could flip through, but that may have only been local to me I dunno.

Before the Internet this was the thing to do! I used to get the auto trader, and the want ad magazine as soon as they hit the stand. By the time I got out of work, I was always on the road to go buy a car or parts! Usually there were four or five guys in the area that bought up all the Mopar stuff, so the competition was fierce! One time my friend and I were looking at a 71 Charger R / T, and the competition arrived, I told him go to the door and pay the seller now, before the bidding war insues! Sometimes we got the deals, sometimes we were too late! The same guy beat us out of a 340 70 Cuda, shaker car a week later! Those were great times, and the road trips were part of the fun!

I have a 2002 Malibu with 118k on both Craigslist and Facebook marketplace right now. It has been ridiculous on Facebook with ridiculous offers and trades and the constant "Is this available?" even though It says in the ad its available if still listed. Craigslist not so bad. Several no shows all week. I am amazed not one person has come to look yet. People can't even bother to read the ad!

I wonder if people do fall for it or if someone is selling a How To book on how they did it and people just have delusions of success. Kind of like the Barkers that used to work the fairs. I think the stupid people are the ones that try the scam.

Tradin' Times FTW!

The recycler and auto trader in San Diego were the go to buys every Thursday in the 80's. Damn I miss those days! The junk yards rocked too!

Had a pleasant surprise with CL a couple of weeks ago when I advertised a Miller spot weld machine. No response as all for about 3 days and then a guy calls from a town about 125 miles away and shows up and buys it. Thing is, he gave me a company check that wasn't signed so I made a phone call thinking I was just scammed. Can't believe I missed the sig not being on it! Anyways, they came back and signed the company owner's name lol. My bank cashed it and seems to be it cleared....and they didn't even dicker on the price. Sweated it for a bit though. Doubled my money on it too. :)

The Green Sheet used to be a good one to buy and sell in back in the 70's. At first, it was just one paper for the whole city of Houston but now, it's like 2700 different ones.....Down town, north, south, east, west, then ne, se, ssw, sww and on and on and on. Only reason to pick up a few anymore is to use them in the cage for the prairie dogs....

Security during the transaction is always of concern.

When I was active duty military, I’d always put the car on the base, then meet the prospective buyers at the gate security to bring them in. Kinda weeded out the scum bags, and dudes with weapons, or arrest warrants.

If things got squirrelly it was a simple call to the BDOC to have the base locked down.

Sold 5 cars that way. Never had to call the BDOC. But had more than a few CL “prospectives” that lost interest when they found out they’d be going on a Federal installation, lol.

I have bought and sold a lot on CL over the years. Yes, the scammers have gotten thick and as noted, if you put your phone number you are guaranteed to get contacted almost immediately with one of the several popular scams and then of course there are the marketers who want you to pay them to sell your vehicle to the supposedly "many" of potential buyers in your area. All that said, I have had some good experiences on there. Unbeknownst to me, CL now charges $5 for a vehicle ad, but it runs for a month. I am trying to sell a 05 Durango on CL locally right now.
