Edelbrock cylinder heads, oil drains

Hello all, I just received my Edelbrock E street heads (big block), and they look good, but I did notice the oil drain backs are now a few holes rather than what a stock head has. I have to assume they are sufficient, or I would have heard otherwise, just looking for input. I knew a guy years ago into Olds motors, and he killed a few due to insufficient oil drain back to the pan.

My engine combo won't be super high rpm, but 7,000 or so is entirely possible.

A few minutes with die grinder is probably all you can do to open and tidy them up.

Also, set them on the block and grind any step at the transition

I smooch mine up with a porting/die grinder and an appropriate carbide in as many areas as needed and also do what BSB67 says. I even enlarge the block drainback. gotta get that sh!t outta there!:thumbsup:
 
I am confused. Why would you purchase e-street heads for an engine capable of 7000 rpm? Wouldn't you want a better breathing head for that rpm? Hope your T-giving went well.

75mm Borg Warner helps move the air along pretty well :) The E streets have the same exact ports as the RPM heads, and flow the same. Not a ton of air, but more than enough to split a stock block open with a turbo.

Yeah....Who spins a big block that high anyway? Even a 383?

Yep, if I don't have to spin it that high great, but if the power curve is still on it's way up, why not? One of the fellows helping me said he figured his first combo should have been done by 6K, when it hit the dyno, the curve went straight up past 7K where he chickened out. :) He warned me early on in this project the turbo will keep on pulling past what you'd expect. I will find out next season I guess.

I did for many years. A guy needs to be comfortable with replacing parts though. Back in the day 7000 was hard on valve springs with big race cams & 440 steel cranks had a limited life expectancy, 350-400 runs @ a 550-600 HP level. 6500 seems like the point where durability drops off.

I have good rods and pistons going in and the little stroke, 7K doesn't worry me. The Edelbrocks were picked as they flow better than most ported iron heads, and have a modern smaller combustion chamber compared to the set of ported 906's I was going to use. I am trying my best to avoid detonation, which I strongly suspect is what is really breaking blocks rather than a set HP number. Hopefully the aluminum heads and high octane E85 help me there. A half dozen of us have a bet on the final #, and if the power is still climbing, I will wind it higher. Loser buys dinner :)
