I was thinking about the drive your classic car trope.

Our cars are basically entertainment. We might enjoy restoring them, racing them, driving them on Sunday or whatever you enjoy about your car. Often the argument is, do what they were made for. They were made for transportation of some sort so that holds. I see rare race cars on vintage races being put into a wall and I cringe. I think it's okay at some point to not do what they were made for.

Take a 2006 Ford GT for instance. Lots of them at auction have super low miles and they are selling for at least double what they were bought for new. I don't mean you should flip a car for profit but I think you can enjoy a car without driving it. There are times when just looking at my 1969 Charger is enough. I have gillions of die-cast cars because I like to look at them from time to time. I have car artwork plastered throughout the house. If you have a perfectly restored high-value muscle car I'm okay with it being a trailer queen or a museum piece as long as looking at it or having others look at it, is what you enjoy about it.

We work our asses off so we can enjoy ourselves. It's okay, go to movies, eat at restaurants, just look at your car as a work of art. It's okay.

Both of my brothers like to collect. Cars,Trucks, Motorcycles, Guns even antique irons and such. They don't use 'um.My brother said he likes to say "Hey I got one of those" Neither of them drive the things with wheels. Some of them they have had for almost 50 years, maybe more. Guess they like looking at them too. Not me If I don't use 'um they are sold off.

Well Steve, if I have “it” I’m gonna use it at least occasionally. Guns, cars, etc.

The guy puts up these threads about cars that he can't afford or worries about what the owners do with their own cars....

To each is own, worry about yourself!......

I can agree with that to a certain extent. Sometimes a car is restored to an extent that one is not comfortable driving it, but they do deteriorate if not driven. I enjoy all aspects of my cars. Driving, looking, restoring, and I'm always trying to improve each one of them. No, I no longer take the Hemi Dart to the strip, and I don't drive the Superbird much because of the gawkers on the street fighting for position to get a better look. Each car I enjoy differently.

I dont drive the Bee as much as I would like but I do drive it. Here in s carolina the drivers make me nervous.

The Art community has never settled the: Arts and Crafts vs. Fine Art debate. Shaping something and painting it is usually considered a Craft. Even when done to high standard.
Is a 68 Charger finished in bare metal with perfect lines, gaps, and panels, Art? It is to me.

Drive them. Save them for what? In time, no one will care.

Having a Classic/Muscle Car and not driving it is like marrying a Playboy Model and never having sex with her. Keeping it fresh for the next owner?

I love driving my Superbird occasionally. My biggest fear is that people around my area tailgating me in the right lane or certain individuals driving junk with no insurance.

I see both sides of it

I understand the mentality of;
spend a shitload to restore something (or so called trailer queens)
keep it nice for a couple years, to go to shows etc.
get a couple of trophies or just to stare at it in your mancave etc.

I understand it, I've done it too
but not anymore, now I personally do like to use what ever I buy
or I don't really want it
it's just a wall hanger or garage ornament otherwise
been there done that, that's not my taste anymore

stationary 'artwork' is something different all together
something that is made to just look at, hung on a wall
or in a display case etc.
some things are truly priceless & need to be protected

Now something with wheels or a trigger etc.
(or a woman especially :poke: )
IMO need to be used or driven, ridden hard & put away wet
at least every so often

I've always been a day 2 type guy,
a racecar type guy, never leave anything alone (well mostly)
go out & beat on them, or have fun anyway & use them as intended
IMHFO, that's what they were originally made for

to each their own
that's my views on it

This is hilarious....I even had a friend of mine drive the X at MCACN.....Something he will never forget....

When the X comes home it will be driven on the weekends(so don't fret yourselves, lol)......The downside is I have to choose days/times because of all the knuckled heads on the roads...Trying to take pictures, getting on my rear and trying to race.....takes the fun out of cruising......

Right now it is at a 7day per week car show available to the public for all to enjoy......Guess that bothers a lot here based on the comments and the OP first post....Geez guys we are all brothers here.....We all enjoy our cars in different ways but we all support the same hobby......

To each is own, worry about your own crap......

The conundrum comes if I were super rich like Jay Leno. I could afford to buy the art cars to just look at them but I could also afford to drive them because if something went wrong I could afford to have them fixed.

so true i live in Florida the drivers around hear are loco.... when i Finnish mine i will drive like i stole it . yes i want to cruising but when i feel that big block man . dont want to race any more i want to drive my car. back in the day all you saw was muscle cars and when 2 road runners passed each other beep beep to say we are brothers . my dad would even beep beep to a G T X as they were like your big brother. all of us share a love for our cars so enjoy your car your way but dont tell me how to treat my car . that is like dealing with a home owners ***, this is America and i will be free and live my way.

That is what insurance is for. BMW, Mercedes and a host of high end cars all get bought and parked in parking lots. Insure your car for enough to make you happy and discard your worries. It is a car after all. If it is a museum piece, put it in a museum. Otherwise it is an object to feel good about yourself when you say, "Look at what I have". This is like people having rooms in their house that can't be used, sat in or even walked in. "That room is just to look at". Perspective is the issue. What if a fire burned your car in the garage? There are no promises in the possession of an object. My car has been with me for 35 years and in my opinion irreplaceable. I refuse to be a slave to the car, maybe that is why I don't have a cat. I am not a possessor, I am an enjoy-er. I don't have my Model yet but maybe the car will change that! Likely a Chevy guy will own my car after I am gone and won't that be a WTF moment?
