Tranny cross member question

I want to change my automatic tranny mount and fix the bearing access plate leak. Can you remove the cross member without removing the exhaust, if you slide the cross member toward the doors. Then, drop one end to slip the crossmember past the exhaust. Id like to know, before I attempt to fight with 50 year old bolts. Looks tight, one way or the other.
 
I can't see any reason why you couldn't. As long as you support the transmission. Should be able to let all the bolts go and pry and slide it out of the way. Correct me if I'm wrong fellow members.

If you slide it, the U shaped portion is going to hit the exhaust on the side you slide it to. Not sure if there will be enough room for the other end to slip down past the exhaust once it hits on the side you slide it to. I’m thinking, I might have to remove exhaust from the manifold on one side. Stock exhaust and manifolds. All B bodies should be the same regarding my question.
 
If you let the trans down a hair, it might give you a bit more room to get the X member out but it will stress things. If you have a small block, you could put the distributor in a pinch too. If the exhaust system is fairly solidly mounted....don't even do it.
 
Bolts on the manifolds? Mine were always just bolts and I use to just twist them off. Just checked my BB manifolds and just have through holes. I guess if they been on there that long might not have much of a head on the bolt and maybe harder to get at then the small blocks.

2 Bolts at the manifold collector. Not, the actual manifold bolts. They aren’t rusty. I shouldn’t have a problem there. But, the exhaust running from the collector is one piece back to the mufflers. Like most 68/69 B bodies are, I believe. The x member will only drop an inch or 2 before hitting the pipes. Therefore, I don’t think dropping the tranny is going to do any good. I think I’m gonna have to take one exhaust side completely off. I just wanted to see if anyone has done it without removing the pipes. I don’t see it being possible. It’s a small block.
 
Well it sounds like you know what your in for. Just plan for it and try not to be in a rush.

It comes out without dropping the exhaust... Unless someone built the exhaust quite a bit different from OE..

Got it off tonight. Wouldn’t come close to being removed without doing something to the exhaust. I unbolted the manifold coupler and dropped the exhaust on the passenger side a few inches. After some heat, surprisingly the original tranny crossmember bolts were easily removed.
All that work, to find out the bearing access plate wasn’t leaking after all, damn. That’s ok, mount wasn’t in great shape and I’m likely going to replace the tail shaft bushing and inspect the governor. At this point. Might as well drop the tranny and replace all of the major seals.
I think I have a good leak at times around the metal nut of the speedo cable. I know there’s a large o ring that goes around the adaptor. But, I believe there’s supposed to be a very small black seal that either goes inside the metal nut or over top of the adaptor threaded portion. I believe that’s causing a majority of my leak. Because I didn’t find one. It’s only damp around the big nut and metal jacket of the cable. Does anyone have a picture of how and where that little seal is installed ?
 
I found this picture Googling. The little seal. Where and which direction is it installed. I’m assuming, if you remove adaptor. It’s on the inside, end of adaptor that is actually on the inside of tail housing. Can someone confirm this or better yet. Show a picture of the little seal installed ?

I found answer. It goes inside adaptor stem. Exterior portion of adaptor.
 
Looks just like the selector seal
Thank you, I assume selector seal is slightly larger. When you install the adaptor seal. I think the spring faces up ? Not sure ? White the selector seal, I think the inner spring is the opposite and faces down ?
