Door hinge pin wear

It's even easier than that if you're not concerned with 100% factory appearance.

Back in the day I had to do so many of them (seemed like every old Mopar I bought had a worn out driver's hinge), I simply got a bolt the next size larger and with a long enough shoulder and drilled the holes to that size.

If you want to spend the extra time to drill for an interference fit on 2 of the 4 holes, and shape the bolt head, you can do that too.

I'm gonna have to do something soon on my drivers door, too.
It's gotten pretty routine to grab a hammer before every drive and give the pin a beatin'.
Nothing more fun than having the door try to fall off in a public parking lot in front of a lot of folks. :)

Every single car I had, or my friends had, was like that at one time or another 20 years ago. I always had them on hand.

I have those but haven’t had the guts to try it yet. Do I need an extra set of hands?
 
I tried those but the holes were elongated (as usual) and the bushings were way too thin to make up the difference.

I also have new hinges. Haven’t had the guts to try them either!:lol: This weekend I’ll finish installing new drivers door card. Here’s the pass. side.
 
Usually the problem is the lower hinge.
I used a ratchet strap from the door handle hung from above.
You still kind of need two people though to make sure the door doesn't swing towards the fender.
It would be a good idea to have an experienced helper, my son is really good at this stuff.
 
Make a simple door holding stand. Need a rubber pad for the bottom edge to set on. Build it to the height and angle front to back for your car and set the outer end on it while installing the bolts etc on the business end. Or while working on the hinges. Get a length of 1/8" rod to go from the right door window slot to the left door window slot that will keep the left door from wobbling either in or out. Basic three point hitch.

Yes , unless you have a door caddy / door jack.
If your working with a floor jack and soft pad you will want someone to steady the door while you take it away from the pillar.

Just did both doors on a 69 road runner by myself using a pulley system and it was a pita but I knew it was going to be as I've done doors by myself before.....on several Challengers!

Use wide straps to support the doors from an overhead pulley when I swapped a couple this past summer. Sure glad the doors on my 66 are light but now they are even lighter than stock.
 
It's a PITA no matter how you do it. This time I think I'll weld up a L shaped tower with the feet under the car. Suspend the door on straps from above. To heavy for me to wrestle with these days. Got to work smarter not harder. Once the hinges are done, I'll gap the door with the Quarter and then drill locator pin holes through the hinge plates for when I reassemble after painting. Slide the pins through and tighten her up. should be in the right place.

If I wasn't quite as lazy-

I'd build a jig that bolts to the jack pad hole and cut grooves in the 2x4 to trap the skin/pinch weld at the bottom of the door.

IMO welding the holes is the best way to repair hinges
the bushings material is softer and will fail more quickly..

Done the floor jack deal before too. Been a one man band for all of my adult life. Usually it was due to working the off shift when my car buddies were all working a different shift than me and weren't off during the time I was. Now I'm like a fish out of water when I do have that rare help and usually end up running into each other.
