They forgot to tell you that it will get to 100 with more ethanol content, which is the cheap shortcut to raise octane. Plenty of late mod l cars runs just fine on 87 right now, no need for 100 and to pay more.

The way to get better economy and more power is get rid of all the ethanol in gasoline. But they don’t want that. They say more power right in that article.

Ever notice “it” always includes a higher price tag?
It won’t have ANY lead in it.

It's not about more power. It is about lowering CO2 emissions by raising fuel efficiency. They can do this by raising octane levels. But they do not necessarily have to use more ethanol, or any, to do it. They can use alkylate and reformate additives.

I have Sunoco unleaded 100 and 110 leaded available here. About $7.60/gal. I could probably squeek out a few more degrees timing on it. My 440 runs fine on 91 ethenol (highest octane available at pumps) set all in at 37 degrees.

That's in my yard, road trip I bring two x 5 gallon cans along. About 10 to 15% added into 91/93 gives the lead and octane I need to run nice.

I use 110 octane, it is available at a couple places close to me. BUT, I can’t go further away than half a tank.

I guess I used some ethanol before I knew what it was. When I was racing in the late 60's and early 70's I was friends with a local pharmacist who raced a 56 Chevy Panel Wagon. On Friday afternoons we prepared to go to the track and he would always put 5 or 10 gallons of Amoco White gas in his race car, as I did. The kicker was he would reach into the back of his car and pull out a gallon or two of something and pour it in the tank too. I asked what this was and he said he mixed a gallon of this menthol alcohol with every 5 gallons of gas and it raised the octane from 100+ to 118+. He gave me a gallon and I tried it and liked the results. He also told me if I couldn't get it from him anytime that really good moonshine would do the same thing. I had to contact the local bootlegger on many occasions, because I think it actually worked better than the menthol alcohol, and was cheaper. Enough said about corn liquor.

There is a small airport near me, I’ve been told they’ll sell to anyone. Might be worth a phone call.
 
Some will, some won't it's all about liability now of course. Even my local float plane base up North won't fill cans, he'll fill my wing tank but not my cans and we're personal friends. Just call your local airport, ask for the manager and ask if you can come out and fill a few cans. If he bucks.. tell him you need to test fill a tank you just built for your RV-4 or similar.

Very good here, this is what I run in most all of mine. I mix it 50/50 with 90 octane recreational fuel which is non-ethanol. That's a net 95 octane and I can tune to that easily. I have sold a car or two in the past that the new owner complained when they filled up with crap fuel in their area.
 
Ethanol doesn’t do the same amount of work per unit as gasoline.
Takes more fuel to get the same end result.
I’m sure I’m missing something here, but I don’t see the advantage.
 
We can get leaded racing fuel at several stations in NE Ohio.
Not cheap, but it is available.

Alcohol (ethanol) raises the octane, but as you say, is less efficient (lower BTU's per unit). It's a trade off.

Octane is highly misunderstood, just the way the gas companies like it. It does not produce more power (as they advertise and want you to think). It simply makes the gas more resistant to detonation (knocking), but I think most people here are gear heads and already know that.
