62 Auto to Manual

Check out how the factory did the tunnel on the original floor-shift '62.

View attachment 690241
That looks like the floor is cut out and the hump is welded in place. The first pic I posted is an unrestored original car, the hump is set over the carpet.
Maybe early builds were set over carpet, later welded in?

The first pic I posted also has a round top/shifter boot, and looks higher. The last pic definitely looks lower and square.
Must be some other hump being used for A833 swaps.

Just checked Brewers, the new hump has the same shape as original with a square opening.

Looks like a 971 oil pan is the stock one that fits.

What about the trans crossmember and mount?

I recall it needs to be modified, not sure, thought Brewers had them but I only see 63-65. I will call them and ask, but if anyone has info it would be appreciated.

TC740 TRANSMISSION CROSSMEMBER 1963-65 B-BODY 4-SPEED-REPRODUCTION

I think the 63-5 trany crossmember is the same as you will need to do a 4 speed conversion. The tunnel sheet metal that covers the shifter is almost a must as it gives you enough room for the shifter installation and the rod travel to the transmission.
The pics are out there of what they look like...nothing saying you can't make your own it's all in what you want to spend vs. what you want to build and design...you just need to trim the existing floor out everywhere the tunnel is to be installed...
I attached pictures of one I cut out of a 65 Belvedere a while back...I assume its a factory piece...I will use this on my AWB car but I am going to bolt it in with inserts in the floor since i'm not running any carpeting...I plan on duplicating it to weld into my 65 Belvedere floor.

Didn't think about the rod travel.
That hump looks just like the new one available.
Since I'm replacing the entire front floor pan, I'm wondering if I should put the engine/trans in first, or the floor?
If I had the hump it probably doesn't matter as the hump should help determine where the floor needs to be cut out.

I need a 971 pan.

Speaking of awb, this one was next to the wagon I bought. Only the rear is done, no engine or interior.

Many of us have had trouble with the engine oil pan on this era B-body, so you need to read up on this, as if your K-Member is the same as 63-65, I don't think the 971 pan will fit.

The 971 fits my '62 max wedge dart.

62 is different, of course, requiring additional brackets for the 318 to big block conversion. Per Schumacher, the 971 pan fits.

The engine I have now has a 402 pan. Anyone know if it will fit?
Dimensions below.

I've read the pan and pickup were available years ago thru Dodge, part #s 3614970 and 3614224.

Stock motor, don't want to spend $200+, the only one I can locate that's not discontinued is Summit G3511 and matching pickup, which is listed as 6 qt but that includes the oil filter (?).

I have gathered the engine/trans, pan/pickup, pedals/linkage, bb power steering pump and pulleys, correct bb water pump housing, bb mounts, shifter/handle, flywheel/clutch/pressure plate, floor hump.

I need the correct bellhousing and fork, shifter rods, a modified trans mount or modify my old one, exhaust, trans yoke, and a driveshaft or have mine modified for a slip yoke.

I'm going to use the stock 318 radiator and torsion bars, at least as of today, and the 8 3/4 open rearend in it now.

I'm still at a loss on this subject. The one I bought for my '62 is too close to the centerlink for my liking. I'll be changing it in the future and it looks like I'm going with the latest Max Wedge pan that just came out $$$

Here's some reading material on what I've been through along with some others on here. Search "1962 oil pan" and there's many threads.

Really, what was the difference?
I know 62 is the oddball k frame as the sb and bb k is the same, only the mounts and brackets are different. Slant 6 k is different from V8 k.

So, looking for clarity on what I will need:
  • 10.5 bellhousing, Brewers BH513RS-719
  • 130 tooth flywheel
  • 7290 slip yoke, Brewers TY8335
I have this clutch, which I believe will work fine: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ctf-df810739

Any feedback is appreciated.
