So I have a brand new and fully-rebuilt 1985 727 transmission with a brand new converter I have all hooked up to my sb 360. I have been as meticulous as possible with every nut and bolt and triple-checked everything I put on this thing and fired it up this morning (was hoping to take it for a spin on Christmas). What ended up happening was I pulled out through my driveway which was a slope and seemed to glide out okay when I was feathering the gas, but right when I hit level ground it literally was limping inches with the gas pushed way too far down than it should need to. I'm talking inches, the TV cable is adjusted and hooked up properly, I actually made it tighter second-guessing myself. Not sure if it was even moving forward at all after a while, I only got about 20 yards and I think she just stopped moving, then I put it in reverse and I was getting nothing from her. I put 5 quarts in and before I had even pulled out I checked the fluid in park and the fluid sat right on full while running. Some people are saying on forums you need to check the fluid in neutral? Maybe I don't have enough fluid in the trans to build pressure for the pump? No smoke had happened during the process, any help and feedback is greatly appreciated, Merry Christmas!

727s get checked in N., should be right on the dipstick.

if you had a completely drained 727, converter included, I don’t think 5qts is nearly enough.

Hey thanks for the response, considering I haven't been able to check it in neutral yet, if that is the case, would that keep it from moving in forward or reverse like my problem is?

I don’t remember how much fluid a completely empty trans takes but I thought it was 8-9qts total with an empty converter. Not enough fluid could cause it not to build pressure and engage.

Are these 727s coming from a rebuilder or are they junk yard parts?

Yeah, I am hoping that it's just having a hard time with pressure build-up. If i could post pictures of the tranny you would know it was done right, a real nice auto-shop had had it completely redone.

That’s good, at least your dealing with a trans that was rebuild by a reputable shop. Maybe hold off until Thursday and give them a call, make sure you have all your bases covered.

Let the engine idle in N and get warmed up. I have an old truck that’s a bit temperamental, when it’s cold and sat for awhile, weeks, it revs really high to get it to move when it’s cold. Starting the truck in N and shifting from there helps.

Capacity is 9.5 quarts, I'd put trans in drive reverse a few times then recheck. You can check in park but neutral will fill trans faster. mo

Alright I might as well hold off but I'll still check out the fluid levels in N and see if it would help adding more if needed. Thanks for the advice I appreciate it, I'll post back on here tomorrow with an update.

Alright thanks for the advice I'll see what happens and post back on here, I'm looking on other forums to see how bad low fluid pressure would affect the driving to see if could be the symptom i'm having.

5 quarts is nothing you need to add more
Well I'll definitely add more then since that seems to be the case, I'm hoping this is keeping it from going into gear...maybe it's a simple fix

So the N thing is to do with the pumps?
I had the 904 in my Scout rebuilt and if I understood correctly, they said only one pump ran in Park, so they modified it so it utilized both pumps in Park as well as Neutral.

13 quart if completely dry. Five quart will not even fill the converter.
I think there was about a half quart in the converter just to keep friction low, I'll just add up to 9 to be safe and see how much i need to add, my pan is not deep at all. Who knows, maybe I will need 13

Mason, get off the forums and fill your transmission, you don’t have half of the fluid in it yet. Transmission is a hydraulic pump, it won’t work without fluid.

It won’t move with 5 qts in it. Will need close to 12 qts total. Please let us know when you are done.

Put shifter in N while you run it so it can circulate. That’s why the dipstick says “check in Neutral”

I'll fill it up first thing in the morning when I can grab some trans fluid, I didn't realize how much fluid I really needed. I'm glad it's an easy fix, just turned 18 and am ready to just have the thing move finally. Thanks for the help. Been through a lot of work for this, Merry Christmas

Just went and grabbed 6 quarts to add it up to 11, since half of the people say 12 and the other half say 9 quarts. Better off with that then 5, I'll go grab more if i need to tomorrow.

Theres plenty of info on the internet telling you how much transmission fluid a 727 holds with converter. There's only one pump in a Chrysler automatic in the new era. When the engine is running in neutral the transmission is allowed to pump fluid all over it and like mentioned the dipstick tells you to idle in neutral and check when hot. The fluid expands a little bit when it's hot and it gives you a more accurate measurement but it'll be pretty close when it's cold. Also you do not want to overfill it. Being 1/8 inch over the full Mark won't hurt you but being a quart over may just push out the excess through the vent.

Thanks for the info, I might have been a bit careless with figuring out how much fluid I need, Im gonna fill it up first thing in the morning, hopefully thats the root cause of my problem
