Oh boy... hey y’all my 73 charger, 440 with 750 Holley double pumper is sputtering and sometimes even dies right as I reach 160 degrees on the dot. When I let it heat soak the problem is worse. I’ve tried everything for vapor lock (I am in Florida). Is there any other way, or other issues that might be causing the sputter?

Does it matter what engine rpm. you're at, what gear or speed? Are you sure it's fuel related, and not a coil or condenser that's going bad and doesn't like to run hot?

Doesn’t really matter what speed, but the problem is usually round 50, as I’ve heated up to that 160. idle and going fairly slow is ok. Gear switch is fine, up or down.
If I’ve let heat soak, and within 15 minutes I turn the engine on, the problem will certainly be there.

Thank you for your reply btw!

Have you tried a non-metallic carb spacer. Ryertex not sure I spelled it correct? KD help:rolleyes:.

Already have one. Along with an aluminum ‘wall’ mounted underneath the spacer. Also have a vapor return line, that’s the old school fuel filter with the 1/4” return for vapor all the way to the fuel tank

You also never mentioned your type of fuel pump. Mechanical or electric.

Ahh, well doesn't make sense why it would run fine until 160. Perhaps like others have mentioned.. Next time it does it check the coil. The roadrunner was sputtering at one point the coil was overheating.

Thank you I will change it out tomorrow and see!

I dont think its vapor lock,Im in s carolina and its hotter hear. What do you mean -heat soak?Does it die everytime it gets to 160? How does it start? Does it run smooth till it gets warm?

Heat soak, I mean when I have driven to at least 160 degrees then shut it off, then five ten minutes later when I turn it on the heat that’s gathered under the hood keeps the carb hot or hotter than before. Then I turn it on and as I get going it sputters for some reason. Either vapor lock which I’m beginning to doubt or something else..

Doesn’t die every time it hits 160 but sputters to the point where it could potentially die if I step on it.
Normal cold start is good and also good til it hits that temp

Do you have any sort of temperature operated vacuum switch?

No, the only extra relay I have that’s temp operated is my extra radiator pusher fan

Thanks for your reply! What do u think?

Not very likely heat soak/vapor lock at that low of a temperature. I'd be looking at ignition. As was mentioned, coil would be a likely suspect.

When you reach 160 is your choke fully open? What setup do you have?

Have a choke? Sounds like a choke that's not opening once the engine's warm. Or, as stated before, ignition components. Check your plugs while you're at it; chances are due to whatever the issue is, they'll be nasty..

Have you checked the fuel pump push rod length for wear? Or checked the operating fuel pressure under both conditions?

Electric choke yea, brand new carb though, plugs were nasty I changed them couple weeks ago, ignition, I’ll change the coil today
