HP exhaust manifold verses Header comparison

Yes, they cook the lower part of the gasket and then they leak. I've tried hi-temp silicone, heavy duty/hi-temp gaskets and after a while the lower part is turned to coke.
Just a minor pain in the ***.

In my humble opinion, it is fairly simple. If you have a 318 two barrel, or even a 360 or 383 with a stock cam and highway gears and low rpm, save your money, put a nice set of dual pipes and the mufflers of your choice to get the sound that you want. Headers might get you 5hp.
If you have a 512 with a roller cam and TF 270s and a dominator, manifolds will only cost 100-150 horsepower.
If you are somewhere in between, say a 440 with a cam, intake, 750 holley, it will be your decision. Just know the upsides and downsides of the decision you make.
Agree 100 percent. Im 69 and have driven HP mopars brand new. They were sick. Loved the power. Mopar designed the HP Exhaust manifolds to give max horse power from stock engines. Adding headers did little if nothing. But any time you change from stock you may need better breathing. My opinion is: It is your car, do what you want. You are not wrong for anything you do. Some love headers, some do not. I build stock motors and do not like headers.

Think I went to cork and rubber on the last set of valve cover gaskets. Never had a problem with deuteration in 160000 leak free miles with HP manifolds.

What camshaft is in your car. "Street Hemi" in mine. Also a '73 Charger. It gets hot in that engine compartment.

Never had a problem getting mine to run better. Grew up with these cars and drove them stock and modified. My mildly built 383 had no problem dusting off the factory 383 road runners and gave fits to 440 powered Chargers too. Had a lot of fun with that 66 4 door Belvedere pissing off the guys with their shiny new factory hot rods. Nutin like a sleeper :D
Btw, the 72's were nothing like the 70 model cars were....and only 2 engines were worth their salt in 71 when everything else went down in compression and power.
So you mildly built a 383 and it dusted off a STOCK 383. Most every thing I say is about STOCK and have also stated that when building an engine Headers may be better. Why does everyone not see my words STOCK?

Because " stock " is not a recognizable term. Now if one was doing a connoisseur to original engine build everyone would know what it was.

My engine was so mild that most would have considered it stock......and pretty much was except for headers and a different carb. It even idled like a stock engine. So, define STOCK. Yup, headers and a non stock carb made it different than stock....at least at the drag strip it did but even having a different size tire on the back put it into a different class. :bananaweed:

Jesus Chrysler. Who dug up this thread. Put Headers on it and be happy with the cooler temps and weight reduction. Stock schmock.

Could it be that the cam specs favored the upper rpm's where the cast manifolds wouldn't have a chance?

Wait..... are we talking stock here?:)

I've had cars with both and really just depends on what you like with performance and sound .
I'm running manifolds because this car is all stock .

Built my motor back a few years ago

Numbers 383 / Now a 440 source 432 Stroker

E Street Heads 75cc

Comp Cams XE275 HL

Original Factory HP Manifolds

Edelbrock 800 AVS2

10.5 Compression - 200#s cold cranking compression on all eight cylinders

Street car with 3:91 Sure Grip / Auto Trans - Honestly great torque on the street , to much for the 275/60 15" Tires out of the hole off idle

RPM’s come on fast shifting the slap stick at 5400/5500

*(Really considering the TTI Shorty Headers for 383 / 400 and head pipes)*

However I don’t want to spend all that time and money for a 10/20 HP difference

‘Now a 50 HP difference and torque , YES I do

Motor or car has never been on a Dyno so what should I expect if I went from HP Manifolds to TTI Shorty Headers ?

Thanx Scott
