The torque converter in my '73 Charger is bad. I'm thinking of replacing the 727 with a manual transmission. If we don't worry about cost, gears, or fit, and only focus on driving experience, how would you describe the experience of driving of a A-833 vs a TKO-600?

I'm asking because I have never driven an old school 4 speed. I'm suspecting it would hard to find and then test drive an old school Mopar 4 speed. But I have driven a T-56 6 speed in a '04 GTO. I'm thinking that the Tremec would be 'too smooth' of an experience and would take away from the old school experience; kinda like putting in a modern Hemi in an old school car. I'm imagining the A-833 is a loud and clunky and goes into a gear like a truck. Is that far off?

my 833 is smooth and quite, never had a tremec so I cant say.

If money or originality are not factors I would go with the Tremec.
I like the 5 speed behind a V8. One to one in 4th and overdrive 5 th.
I have ridden in a couple of cars with the 6 speed and 1st was like a rock crawler gear.
No use at all on a torque street engine.

TKO (SST - love mine) is like having the 833 4 speed with an extra gear. Without the balkiness. That said, I’d keep the automatic and consider gear vendors.

Jammie Passon has 5 speeds that require no cutting and are a bolt in affair.

I have two charger rallyes with 4 speeds. They have 3.55 rear gears and are a blast to drive. There's nothing like slamming gears with a pistol grip

Look on YouTube for 1973 Dodge Charger rallye 4 speed takeoff. . It's my in car view of my 73. Not a perfect video but may give you an idea

My '02 Ram 2500 was like that with 31" tires and 4.10 rear. The 1st gear is 5.61 which makes an effective ratio of 23:1! That made 1st gear way too low and 2nd way too high. It was really terrible to drive. Now it's about prefect with 37" military tires with 1st gear topping out at 20 mph and 2nd gear dropping right into the 360 power band. I want to avoid something like that happening.

I think you're right about the gears. A five speed is best a v8...

Jammie Passon has 5 speeds that require no cutting and are a bolt in affair.

And the A-855 has the prefect gear ratio for a Big Block Mopar. Every red-line shift will drop you in the meat of the power band of the next gear. That transmission would give that old school feel along with modern driveability. But at $5.5k a pop, just the transmission is twice the price of an A833 kit and almost the cost the TKO kit.

Passon's overdrive gear set seams like a good compromise between cost and performance. That gearset with a 3.73 rear gear would be a good combo. It would be like a 727 with a 3.92 and an OD (basically an A518).

My 4spd is smooth and quiet, OD would be nice though

..so I think I might go with the A-833 OD kit, while keeping my option open between the A855 and TKO600 by 'investing' in a good hydraulic clutch and multi-bolt pattern bellhousing.

TKO (SST - love mine) is like having the 833 4 speed with an extra gear. Without the balkiness. That said, I’d keep the automatic and consider gear vendors.

Negative. Three pedals is part of my religion.

Passon has extended delivery issues. Hope you are a young man.

So order the parts soon and hope my torque converter holds out?

I busted it racing a '18 Charger SRT 392 on GA400. He rev'ed by window, I said 'ah hell nah!', slammed into second at 65 mph, my car took off like a rocket, I blew his door off, but I broke something inside the torque converter. Now it's real rough until it locks up, then it vibrates something awful. It was smooth as glass before that day. It's only somewhere between 30 and 45 year old. I should have replaced it when we had the engine out in '16.

questions answered but OP's queston
nothing like an old school truck 4 speed

Out of curiosity, if you've never driven an "old school 4 speed"....what manual transmissions
have
you driven?

I would not have a problem cutting a little here, bending a little there if it was required to be able to install the Passon 855 5 speed, BUT it is the ONLY 5 speed that does NOT require chopping up your Mopar!
My point is that I like the Passon 5 speed SO MUCH, I'd cut my car!
A little gear noise is normal in the lower gears, but on the rare occasion I may notice it, it only reminds me of the strength of the beast that connects my mill to rotating the earth, and that is one of several reasons why I got the a855, rated for 700 continuous ft lbs of torque!
I am planning a stroker that will live in that neighborhood!

Call/email Jamie Passon tell him 73 Charger, auto to manual 5 speed conversion.
Your wait time could be over a year or more!
I just bought a tricked out TKO600 5 speed for the Tripower 421 in our 65 Pontiac GTO. It's going to be GREAT.
I would use a TKO in my Roadrunner as long as it was as strong as what I have now.

As long as you have three pedals you can't go wrong.
Two pedals are for pussies.
This pussy says grab a lane:poke:
Pushing my OWN buttons for over 25 years in my streeter beater:rofl:
