And based on the smoke and the melting... I assume I'll need a new one of those lol. I think it's like a $20 part if I am not mistaken.

I had been screwing with a new battery charger and maintainer... my car port collapsed on the car after the first snow fall so I hadnt started in too long.

Eh, I'd start simple and work out as necessary from there.
Replacement voltage regulator, a good one, from the local NAPA or wherever.
Once installed (along with a properly charged battery, which should be disconnected
from the car when being charged), then fire her up and take simple voltage readings
at the battery to see if the charging system has been restored to functional status.
Cars 101 stuff here.

make sure you have it grounded good.

Man, you're screwed.
Check the tire pressure then the coolant level.
It has to be one of those two.
Let us know.

I guess you are new to the "Old Car" hobby?
Welcome! There are lots of helpful people here and some smart asses like me.....

Every experienced Mopar guy on here has gone through this; in my expedience I change the VR and the alternator when this happens as i have had times when I change the VR only to have it happen again, then change the alternator and back and forth.
