Happy New Year Eve!
So after I found out my engine was junk I had the new quality engine builder write me a quote to build a fresh engine. My original block was done, crank was shot, only real things saveable were the rods, intake (M1), and possible re-grind of the bullet racing cam. Because this is the first true professional engine build I am getting myself into I wanted to list his estimate to gain opinions if this seems reasonable cost. Here we go: short block is $7274.00

Who is furnishing the block and crank or do you have to buy that also?

If you are supplying the block... $600 for a sonic check is ridiculous! If he’s supplying the block, then you are paying roughly $475 for the block... sonic checks generally run $125

Builder has a crank and supplier of sonic checked blocks. He has 6 ready to go blocks at this time.
I'd say not a bad price with him supplying the block and crank. I usually end up with 4-5K in a build with no dyno time. But that does include head work, and we assembly everything.

Yea, with rpm heads all in I’m looking at 9500.00. Spendy. But his reputation is well known as a good and attention to detail builder.

exactly why I only pay for any machine work absolutely necessary and assemble my engines myself.

Dyno price ($750) and fuel for dyno ($50) seems very high. I paid half that for 5 hrs of dyno with gas. Cam work price seems high (compared to new) but I'm not sure of that cam.

I've had my 440 rebuilt in 2019 and found the total price quotes varied by a large margin. Check out the complete 440 crate engine prices or complete performance rebuilt engines from other businesses.

Only cme does big block crates that I can find and that’s across the country. I want a builder that’s close if there’s a problem. I’m checking with other builders to get more price quotes. I appreciate the input.
