Looking at pursuing a 1969 Dodge Coronet RT. The car I'm interested in is a real RT. 440, 4 speed, non console car, 8 3/4 rear end, not sure on the gearing, and they didn't know at the shop. They say they car is numbers matching and has an intact build sheet as well. Here's the rest of the scoop, the rust repair is complete. There will be some body work and blocking to do before paint. The shop that owned it looked inside the engine and all looks good, simple rebuild is needed, although motor isn't running and hasn't run since the shop that owns it has had it.Trans should be good to go. The suspension was taken off the car and cleaned up then put back on. Needs a new clutch assembly. Gaps could use a bit of fine tuning. Glass looks good, as does the rubber, new chrome bumpers and emblems in good shape. the interior is done, but the dash has a cheap dash pad on, so dash could use a little work as well. All wire harnesses look good. gauges look good as well, although not sure if they work since the car is not running. The car was originally Y4 classic Gold Metallic with a Black Vinyl top, stripe delete. The shop says the car is basically 85% complete. Anyway, given the description I have provided, what do you think would be a good price to pay for it. I know I'm asking a difficult question particularly without pics, but any estimation would be greatly appreciated. He asked me to make an offer, any suggestions?

First thing that jumps out at me is that if it's an original R/T 4 speed car, it should have a Dana 60 rear, not the 8 3/4.
Next thing that I notice you saying, over and over, is that "the shop says....".
Have you actually seen the car yourself in person? Laid hands on it?

Just remember that primer can hide a lot of shoddy metalwork, or even bondo over rust. It is always a big gamble buying a car in primer. Like stated above, if it is in fact a 4-speed R/T, there should be a Dana 60 under it. The VIN does start with WS23L, correct?

The most basic of wisdom when it comes to buying ANY used car is - never buy a car you haven't
personally had your hands on and inspected in person - or, if you feel your ability to do so competently
isn't enough, to have the car looked at by someone more knowledgeable.
The least wise thing in the world to do would be to ever buy a car sight-unseen - and no, pictures and
"they said...." doesn't count.
Caveat emptor. Buyer beware.

any pics of car and the work that shop said it did on it,have look under the car to inspect your self, what about the title?

Don't be taken in by it being said "Real R/T, matching #'s". If you're considering putting any serious money in this car without looking at it in person or having it inspected by someone with real knowledge of these cars, Don't. There are members here on this site from most everywhere that may provide assistance. I'm glad you are asking for help here. That's a positive step to making a good investment. Buy nothing without looking in person or by someone of your chosing. Take their word for nothing and you will be money ahead. That being said, all I'm hearing is a lot of "They Said." This car in "Said" condition could be worth anywhere from $1500-$15000.

You need to look at it. I had 2 friends look at my bee in NY. Pics look great but dont show crap. Just saying, good luck.

There are a few threads on FBBO and FABO about good people being snookered on cars they bought. If the seller isn't your Mother, don't believe anything absolutely. And if your Mother is Ma Barker...lol. Seriously, for the money they will want, verify everything! Good luck with your search.

My 2 cents... If the engine needs gone through, trans and rear end needs gone through, at least resealed. Been sitting? Brakes will need attention. Said suspension was taken out and cleaned, any new parts installed? No? Figure on a complete suspension rebuild. Really not trying to discourage you, just saying what it takes to make a mediocre driver into a “nice” car.
Value? What you envision versus what you can afford is what it’s worth. Make an offer.

All the above postings are good info IMO.
I would throw a value of around 10 grand on it, if it’s a real RT and has the original engine.

Sounds like a pile of parts that someone gave up on to me. I would strip it back down 100% and start from scratch on a project like you are describing.

Be aware that you will have another 40,000 or so into something like you are describing to end up with a nice driver type car.

Don’t be fooled by the 85% done BS. Not a chance that that is accurate.

Go see it and report back.

small parts and being 1 year only will add up,just ask me how I know

1. Engrave this in stone.
2. Remember, anything that cannot be proven visually or with significant documentation, Probably didn't happen/isn't true.
3. The seller wants to SELL it. Therefore white lies really aren't lies in his mind.
4. FBBO members don't let other FBBO members become victims.

I dont think RTclassicfann is feeling the love,no replies

Sometimes your heart is set on a car, and you don't want to hear the bad. We just don't want him to get bamboozled. Then again maybe he is working this weekend like I am stuck doing!

That post has about a hundred red flags flying at full mast... way too many "they said" and too much ambiguity going on there to put a value on it. The OP obviously wants the car but this is a text book case of trying to make the details fit the desire; glossing over the glaring issues such as "took a look inside the engine and it just needs a simple rebuild"... what does that mean, did they tear it down or stick a flash light in a spark plug hole.. No way to know what is going on without tearing it completely apart or at least having it running. Also, "took the suspension off and cleaned it up and reinstalled it"... who does that, if you take the time to take it apart why wouldn't you rebuild it? This sounds like a dog with fleas... But, it is is cheap then it might not matter...

Thanks for all the input guys, always value what other members have to say. Asked the same question before I bought my 1972 Dodge Charger three years ago. This site is a great resource. Talked to the guy a bit more, he said he has a Dana 60 that can go with the car for an extra cost. The top end of the motor was inspected, but they then put it back together with no gaskets????? The reason for selling. have three other projects in paint and don't have time to finish this one. They claim to be a Mopar Garage. Might have to travel the three hours to check it out personally if I want to pursue it any further. Thanks again guys.

Only 3 hours, get on the road. I traveled from Wetumpka Alabama to Manhattan New York with a trailer and left a supposed 68 Coronet R/T sitting and went home. You win some and lose some.

I guess the big question here also is, what is he asking? If its $25,000 then forget it. If its $10,000 then maybe get a bit more interested.

on the road again  let us know how it works out. I would do 3 hours just for a part.
