Then your car did originally have 8-track. I look at your radio's chrome face plate and it looks angled with the long lower opening lip. The 68 C- body has the slanted dash face.

Thank you for your posts. I have to figure out what my next move will be. I had bought those end speakers but I dont believe I post them in as they were suppose to me not compatible with the new radio. I wish I did now. The other thing is that amplifier, what it does and how its wired in. Do I need it with the old radio? I have to look for the old harness... I used the front speaker the new radio guy recommended, a dual cone. I bought these under seat speakers that didn't fit under the seat. Im not looking for concert hall results but what I have now is lousy. A far as I can tell I followed the speaker wiring and used the correct wires,,, I will be checking it out soon and thanks to all for the advise

Nope I dont have that dash frame. Mine must not be original to the car. but it is going to stay. lol

BTW...is this a re-boot of your previous thread nearly 3 years ago? Or progression of the installation. Check what I did at the bottom of that thread.....and it looks like your 8-track radio is correct to me.

The dash is a modified unit for AM/8Track, it was not a stamped change. I have seen 5 factory dashes and they were all holesawed for the speakers. You can modify it before it is installed.

Thank you , I guess I need to bother someone for proper measurements. I do remember my cousins new 68 R/T had front speakers. His was factory 8 track.

Is there a trick to preserving the tapes? I know VHS tape will deteriorate over time. I never owned many 8 tracks because I went to cassettes when they came out. Preserving VHS would be valuable info if they are along the same composition as 8 track.

The biggest thing is the splice dries out. I test play mine (if I find ones to buy) and stop it at the track change splice. re-in force the splice. Also the foam pads deteriorate but they sell new ones at Kate's. But Kate at the track shack will go through them for a couple $ each or you can buy ones from her already done. And if you use these old original players the capacitors go bad in them from age. Kate's husband rebuilds them and does a very good job. He did mine for about 130.00. Well worth it.

Steve, @69b3rt may be on to something. First thing I thought when I saw your pic was that it was a 68 c-body radio. The pic above (taken off of the internet) is the one that I think would be correct for your car.

To answer your question I have never had one go bad from time. The only thing that will ruin them is hot sun shine and getting a magnet close to the tape. I have original Beatles tapes from 1964 that play like new.

@steve from staten island Could you take a couple more pics of that radio-specifically the side view? I have asked around, and it seems like it is a C-body 8-track. Also, does it have a part number on it somewhere?

I have the same radio I just pulled out of my 70. Im gonna send it put to be completely rebuilt with all modern insides as well as blutooth. I have a hidden sony deck and kenwood amp in the glovebox. But I lost the use of the box ,AND you cant tune anything unless you open the glovebox door!, The factory when redone will have am/fm now and a fully rebuilt new a8track. more than enough.. I can barley hear it anyway with the windows down. So for banging around town its more than enough.
