On a couple occasions I've had to keep a close eye on my gas cap. I'm not keen on changing the design of the side mldg but just wondering if a flip cap can be installed within the Belvedere trim without altering the trim. Can't find dimensions for the flip cap. Thanks

I don't think you can do it with the existing trim.
Nice cap though...I'd like one for my car.

Had one on my 66 Satellite didn't have that large trim ring, leaked like a pig. Get an extra piece of chrome and cut the new piece to fit 67 GTX chrome trim ring. Keep your original piece so if you change your mind.

I have another trim piece and was planning to take some measurements to see if it would work and how it will look. Hoping to get flip cap dimensions before destroying the trim. Next step, buy the flip cap. Will post the results.

Buy the trim ring. Trim ring goes on before cap. Not posative why mine leaked but wrecked the paint on quarter. Accelerate hard and gas comes up fill tube, if cap doesn't seal out it comes.

You will have to cut that trim.
The order of parts for a flip cap install:
Remove screws holding pipe to quarter panel
Install spacer bracket
Install rubber spacer
Put on trim ring and cap and install screws through to spacer bracket

The rubber spacer seals against the trim ring and holds it tight to the filler neck. The trim ring wouldn’t be needed with your Belvedere trim, but then you are missing the thickness of the ring which holds the rubber spacer in place and it will cause a leak.

I have all these parts off my car, would you like photos?

Thanks to all. Yes... I would love some photos. Not sure if this is going to work or how it will look. Shame I’m even thinking about this. But at $500 for a new cap, if mine mysteriously goes MIA, it’s worth a shot. Will be sure to post the results.

Since I put a cell in my floor I used the former filler hole for this:

Those "emblem caps" have been a high theft item for a looong time.

Now even the base caps get stolen.

I'd advise installing a tether.

Usually anything that slows a casual thief down will stave off a high percentage of walk by attempts.

If they have to come back with a screwdriver or wire cutters.....

Photos would be appreciated. I have a separate piece of trim (to cut) and bought a '67 GTX cap. Will see what happens. Thanks.

Hope you bought the trim ring? It should let cap seat/seal filler. As always MO, your car,:D Good luck whatever you do. Picture before, during and after, please.

I like the 'tether' idea from YY1. But just for s&*ts and giggles I'd like to see if it's doable. Already had to replace my original cap once - I'm guessing it's on someone else's car.

Those caps go on ebay and you know what they cost! The tether idea is good to slow them down. I have the wife sit so she can look down driver's side. Even Satellite gas caps $100+ never mind woodgrain steering wheel horn pad. Picture frame hanging wire/cable would work and a small hole going into trunk? (rain/ washing car a problem?)

The GTX cap is actually the "cheap" option to solve the theft problem.

I agree, the trim ring is an integral part of the assembly and it won't seal without it
(You'll also need that secondary rubber seal)

I believe Megaparts sells the parts separately, including the seal and trim ring.

You could put the tether under one of the three screws that hold the trim to the fill tube assembly.

Speaking of those screws, the originals a re three point theft deterrent screws. They are on ebay but pricey.

The same screws were also used to secure factory radios to the dash on 80's 5th Ave cars and I'm assuming others.

Thanks for the info on the stealing, my nos one will have a tether cable.

To make tether this video gives you an idea how, start 3 mins in he makes more complex than necessary. If have Hobby shop nearby that's where to get this stuff. You need 2 eyelets, braided cable. copper wire and solder. At the end he uses epoxy, I prefer solder.
