Who has MOVED from their home state ? How difficult was it for you?

I guess I am lucky in this respect and yet somewhat unlucky. I never really had a home state or town. I was born in IN. But never grew up there. Lived in eastern NE till I was about 10 then WY till I was 16 then NM till I was 22 then WY till I was 45 then and now S.D. I don't recall any place being home. And as such no real connection to any place. But as a job I worked on the North Slope of AK for 30 years so in that time I spent 6 months there 6 months in WY. I consider all states communist that have state income tax and refuse to live in any of them. Some of these even charge you to drive on there roads each time you use them. Give me my out in the middle of no where life. So probably will live in South Dakota the rest of my years. Don't get me wrong here if you grew up that way it might not bother you. Our state has very low property taxes cost very little to license cars has no state income tax. A huge amount of public ground. And not a lot of silly laws to control people. THIS IS NOT POLITICAL IN ANYWAY!!! Just how I feel when I read how some of the group live. I have lived so differently my whole life than most on here. Yes I miss the fact that I never grew up around family and never had any child hood friends that I went to school with my whole childhood. But long story short you can survive in any place. You have to be adaptable some can some cant.

That is not the case here. I have a couple of years before I can retire with a full pension. The Wife makes good money and can work from home anywhere with a good internet connection. Wherever we might move isn't something I'd see as temporary. I am not certain that we would leave. Right now we are just looking at options.
We are in agreement about what we want. We like green grass, rolling hills, lots of trees and maybe even water on the land either in the form of small streams or a pond.
The weather needs to be reasonably similar to Sacramento CA. No heavy snow, no high humidity and no 120 degree Summers. We would prefer property with at least 10 acres. The Wife looked at Zillow listings and found all sorts of properties in Tennessee that seem to meet the criteria. The state sales tax is actually higher there than in CA! What??? a 7% state tax with an average 2.45 local tax for a 9.45 % average! Here where I am it is 7.75%. The property taxes are lower though. I'd imagine gas prices are too.
I do recall members here that were once California residents that moved away. I have heard of several people that relocated to Idaho. What do you know about that state? I love the spirit of Texas but if it looks as flat and barren as most of Nevada or Arizona, I'll politely decline.
To those that did move, was it difficult to adjust? Did you have any regrets? I've lived here since I was 2 years old so this is not an easy thing to decide. The Wife left family in Arizona to move here. Moving again would not be as difficult for her.

Property taxes low in MO?
Don't come to St. Charles or St. Louis counties (does not include the city of STL it is separate).
I just paid my real estate tax on a 960 sq ft house w/o garage on a 125 x 175 lot...$1800!
Then the personal property taxes and other govt gouges kill me. And I am not in city limits.
As for weather? It can get pretty hot/humid with tornadoes and wind or cold/snow/freezing rain at times.

By comparison my son just sold a 2000 sq ft house on 6 acres near Columbus, MS. His taxes were under $500.
Now he's in AL on 100 acres with 3 ac pond and 1800 sq ft house 2 garages.
His taxes are under $500.

@Slap Stick don't come to Ct. My 2100sqft house just paid bi annual taxes $2550 and that's with $450 senior discount. July pay the other half.

South Dakota (Pennington County) Rapid City area. I have 6 1/4 acres of timber 1900 Sq/ft house a 66 x 35 foot finished shop 2 double carports and 2 12x14 sheds. Just under 3000.00 a year. I put plates on 3 pickups , a jeep , 5 cars , A34 foot 5th wheel , a 17' boat , a boat trailer and a 18 foot car trailer for about 750.00 a year. No state income tax.
 
Property taxes in Ohio. (Near Norwalk raceway) out in the country. 6,200 a year.
 
If I bought my home today I’d be paying about $7500 in taxes for a 1700 ft Condo. Orange County, CA. As I bought it many years ago we only pay $2500 because of Proposition 13. Taxes are fixed at the value at which you purchased your home. Makes it difficult to move if you’ve been in your home for a long time and you want to stay in CA.

Familiar with Seiverville. SIL has a cabin in Townsend where we go for reunions. Everytime I am there I have to go to "the Station" in Maryville for BBQ. It is a nice place to live.

Tomorrow, I start discussions about transferring to Indiana.
 
i didn't read all the posts but have a big stake in this race.I have moved probably 20 times over the course of my life.Always in the province of Ontario but moved as much as 700 miles.
It's all in your outlook.Every place has it's advantages and disadvantages. You speak of cold but with a little effort and an open mind you can enjoy or get used to anything. When i started drinking cheap beer i hated it...after a couple of months it was my favourite! lol
Having been in one location you're whole life you may find this type of change difficult.

That part of the country is going to be our next venture this spring. We plan a 3 week trip with the 5th wheel twice a year. Going TN and KY this March-April. I have been down there a few times but my wife has not. So I hope there are a few events like this along the way.

A lot of where can live depends if you are retired or not, and if retired poor like me or with some $$$$$$$!!!!!!
 
^^^^ Austin, Tx used to be just like the rest of Tx (good) until the computer jobs/companies moved in and thus the Ca. people came for those jobs.

I still think the best places to move to are the ones most people think are not worth moved TO!!!
 
Cody WY was like that. A lot of big money from CA came in. Housing shot up big time. It wasn't so much that as some brought with them the very thing they left to get away from. But in fairness not all were like that. I lived out of town close to the Yellowstone border. I had two neighbors from CA build a 500,000 home right next to my property(I had 6 acres) Nicest people you could have for neighbors. I had CA people on both sides. Loved them both. There are real folks from there that just cant live there anymore. But I do know what your saying too.

You're right, but ask him what it cost to license his car every year.
