I have a 65 BB cable shift 727 from an Imperial that I need to change the tail shaft. The tail shaft doesn't have an opening to access the clip that is used to release the shaft. Do you just remove bolts and it lifts off? Thanks

Is the trans a 65? Are you wanting to remove output shaft. Governor or rear pump?

IIRC, the '65 Imperial uses the constant-velocity u-joint and has a bolt-on yoke. Remove the nut on the yoke, remove the yoke and the tailhousing will unbolt from the case.

Thanks Dipstick. Ernie, as stated it's a 65. I want to change tail shaft to a slip yoke. Imperial's shaft is short, and doesn't use slip yoke. I need the longer shaft used on other Mopar models. I have correct tail shaft, output shaft, governor and rear pump to install in the case.

Ok so want change to long output shaft right? Shaft extends into the front planetary assy. See pics arrow indicates end of shaft. If so trans needs to come out

I removed bolt and yoke. The housing still won't come off (it seems that something is still holding it). It had a cable shift for park but someone cut it off. I removed the park cover. There is a lever in there that appears to have been operated by the cable. Would this be holding it up? If so, how I do I move it? Thanks

Won't move at all or comes off a ways and hangs up? Remember, one of the bolts is longer, it goes through the park housing.

On later 727's that long slot has a OD snap ring. Tge one closest speedo gear.

Speedometer gear was removed. Fran, if you look at tail shaft posted in #7 you can see cover to access snap ring. My tail shaft doesn't have that cover. It is solid. I don't know if park is engaged, hampering the housing from coming off. Park cable was cut, not allowing anyway to pull or push to release park if that is what is needed.

Again, when trying to remove it, will the tailhousing separate from the case...if so, how much? If it won't separate from the case but will turn, it just needs more persuasion to remove it from the rear bearing.

When I say that is will turn, it turns about an 1/8th of an inch. Can't even get thin blade of screwdriver under it to try and pry.

Never pry by sticking something between the case and the tail, this can gouge the gasket sealing surface. Pry between the case pan flange and the park flange.

If worse comes to worst, thread the nut back onto the shaft, suspend the transmission by the tail and smack the nut to loosen the shaft from the bearing.
