I'm not happy but I installed a used 3:26 ratio unit this week. Right now I'm having to order a pinion seal on line as three local suppliers can't find the right part or didn't supply that part. This was the result of having the one I had rebuilt two hundred miles and twenty months ago. The shop that did the rebuilt balked at standing behind their work. The gear started making and unusual noise but the shop wouldn't even drive the car. Now I'm waiting for Rock Auto to send that seal. Wish me luck on the road test of this used one.
On a good note, I have finally managed my life to the point where I can spend my free time on this car. The third member is just one thing. I rebuilt the 727 last spring and last year disassembled the big block, had the heads done and cleaned the block. I have a lot of the engine parts together just have to order bearings, rings and cam kit to complete this drive train rebuild. Right now if this rear works OK I'll stick with it but in the Toledo area we have two shops that say they can do the work but both now have disappointed me.

If it's a 742 order seal from drdiff. If a 741 Rock auto ok. MO

May I ask your reasoning on vendors?
Mike
Noticed some people had leaking seals bought for 742. 742 seals from several threads over last couple of years went to local part vendors and had leaking problems. May had gotten 741 seals by mistake??

I Always go with parts and advice from Dr diff in Montana....seems super knowledgeable and good prices

Which one was the leather seal available for? Damn, must be getting Oldtimers! As many 8 3/4's I've worked on you would think I'd remember.... :(

742. I recently set up a 3.23 Sure Grip for a buddy and used one.
Mike

Autozone had that seal but not the one I needed which in my experience as a Mopar mechanic in the seventies I never saw this seal used.

Got the car back together over the past two days road tested it and it has a slight carrier bearing noise but nothing I'm worried about at this time. I'll take that rebuilt center section back to the shop that rebuilt it so they can take it apart and see what the noise was. Weird as it was it's a clacking noise on deceleration something I have never heard in my experience. I saw some spider gear slop on its shaft which isn't right but hardly the problem in going straight. Right now I'm staying on getting the engine together and in the car before I spend more money on that rebuilt center section.

I spent the day cleaning engine parts something I should have been doing after I tore it apart a year and a half ago. I need to clean the piston and rod assemblies next probably after Christmas. So far the crank has measured at pretty close to specs. Found the pushrods with rust on them fifty percent on the average. The used Federal power steering pump I bought had water in it at some point and is seized. Oh well, I got good pully and a reservoir from it. eBay has them from time to time rebuilt.

I live just over the state line. You gotta drive to Livonia or Farmington hills to get quality machine work. I heard there’s a place out in Fremont that does good work also.

Thanks for the tip 68 HEMI GTS.

Pulled the engine and trans over the weekend getting ready to clean the compartment up in preparation to paint. Much work to do in my future here torsion cross member rotten so replacement is a must. Pulling the heater box to replace a noisy blower motor, pulling the instrument cluster to clean it replace light bulbs and attempt to refinish the silver trim with "paint pens". While the heater is out I'll pull the wiper motor to clean and do an amateur refinish job. I spend every other day out there so the job don't get to boring hope to get her together and onto the road and to the cruise-ins around here. The "Woodward Cruise In" is another goal for myself in the future.

Engine and trans is for sale previously owned by lady school teacher from Carlton Mi. I bought it off her son who said the car sat garaged for ten years when I bought it. Has 66K on the clock but must not have been maintained as it has oil starvation on start up, noisy lifter till warmed up, rough idle maybe a valve issue. The transmission don't engage for a couple of seconds when cold otherwise warmed up it shifts great. Oil was not burnt and clean. Radiator air cleaner and transmission linkages etc comes with it. I drove it to shows and on the highway so it's a good buy if your putting a car back to original. I'm putting in a big block reason for replacing it. I'm in Toledo Ohio. $500.00 and I'm firm on that price.
