Anyone remember this kind of a gas cap?

Are '66 Hemi Satellites supposed to have a painted one or this one? I've seen them both ways.

Satellites plan cap.

I'm the 3rd owner when I bought it had the 67 GTX cap. Called original owner to see if he had original cap, the one in picture is it.

Mine came with the one in the picture I posted. It was a replacement by the previous owner after his was stolen. I assumed that it was the same as the one that was stolen. If you google '66 Satellite pics you can find a lot of pictures of both kinds of cap on various cars. I figured the top trim model - the Satellite - would have come with the fancier cap, so I always thought the one I have is correct. Maybe the fancier cap was a common add on for some owners.

The 66 with the belt line moldings that encircle the gas cap would look goofy with the plain cap. On the passenger side its faux to resemble the gas cap. So to have an oddball cap on the driver side would take away from the look. Its ok if you dont have the belt line moldings it looks okay in that sense. But if you have the side molding then you need the correct cap.

have a 16 gallon fuel cell in ours. Put the stock cap on when car got painted. If you highlight the picture of it on the trailer you will see it. Fuel cell is about 12" deep, two inches of that is above trunk floor. So we just pull up to the pumps ( 689 HP / 675 lb.ft. on pump gas!) open the trunk and fill it up. Gets a crowd every time. Plus as you can tell you see it and hear it before it's there.

My first car was a 66 Belvedere II and had the belt/center moldings. Was kinda funny how many gas station attendants didn't know where it was. Had one guy go to the license plate first then to the right side of the car and since that side didn't turn, he figured the left side wasn't it either. This was back in the day when the car wasn't all that old but was about 3....and gas station attendants usually got an attitude when you got out to pump your own gas.

Wasn't it that body style or another that was known to have their caps stolen all the time?
It was a kid prank. I heard that they would take them off if a door was unlocked, put them in the back seat - that way you did not steal. But problem was you could never see reaction so the kids that I heard did it, gave up really quick. By the way I never was a bad kid ( just ask my MOM) and never did it, just heard about it!! BUT:
The Mastersons across the street had a 66 VW bug. Heard people say you could pick the front end up of the ground. Of course I knew a person could not pick up a car by themself. Until I tried it. It actually easy. Just stand with your back to the front of the car, grab the bumper and straighten your legs. ( it has got to be got to be a 67 or earlier though- or so I heard). So someone could - not me of course - again Mom will verify, but two people would get it done quicker, would just lift it and turn it sideways in their driveway. Now we could watch Mr. Masterson come out in the morning look very puzzled and spend 20 minutes getting it back to normal ( he tried to stay off his lawn - which was impossible unless you lifted it), part of is puzzlement was the lawn was totally unmarked, so eventually he was forced to drive on it. Took us - not me of course- less than five minutes to rotate it on it's rear wheels. Just heard about it though - don't ya know!

Sounds like we all lived on the same street! :D

My neighbor lady swore I had put a cat in her mailbox. She said you should have seen the mailman's face when he opened the box the next morning. He had a heck of a time getting the cat out of his mail jeep too. I swear it wasn't me!

I'll do ya one better. A buddy's beetle in high school somehow found itself hoisted by the chain on the school flagpole
one day - not too high up, just enough for the whole car to clear the ground.
Didn't want to get too carried away with the prank.....errrr, I mean whoever did that didn't want to get too carried away. :)
