Did the 74 Charger power bulge hoods come with an insulation pad? If so, were they performed and which supplier do you recommend for the best pad? Thank you for any input.

They did not come with the hoods automatically. It was an option. There are some vendors that sell them and you can find them on feebay. Your choice will be either regular cut pad or the molded cut pad. I have the molded pad. Of course the molded ones are more expensive.

Chrysler used the molded style pads from 1964 and going forward to my knowledge. These pads are a grayish black fiberglass stranded style material. They are molded with heat and pressure to produce defined reinforcement ribs that duplicates the under hood structure.

Chrysler never factory installed a die cut loose material during the years that we are concerned with. You will see incorrect ones being sold that may have the outer profile correct, but that is the extent of the correctness. You will also see a variety of materials being used.

Depending upon the correctness your searching for with your car, it will possibly affect the decision that you go with. The loose style material will help in suppressing noise, the original intent, and will also help to prevent heat from possibly affecting the paint on the hood.

Basically all vendors are selling the product as coming from REM or Repops. Both of these manufactures offer both styles of the pads. The cheaper and generic style mats can be folded up tightly and be shipped at a greatly reduced price. The correct molded pads have to be shipped flat and thus the boxing is "oversize" which equates to much higher shipping prices. This is one of the items that if you can purchase directly without shipping, then you will come out ahead.

I'm trying to decide whether to get one of these for my 73 Charger. What is the purpose of the under hood insulation? Are you trying to keep all the heat in the engine bay? It seems to me that it would be more beneficial to let it radiate through the hood. Thanks.

I have insulation on the inside of the firewall to keep the heat and sound from the engine bay from entering the cabin. Still not sure what under hood insulation is supposed to accomplish.

Edit: Unless the engine heat could damage the hood decals?

Basically, it suppose to reduce noise and to dress up the underside of the hood......nothing special.....

Remember since earlier 70s the comfort began to be part of the offer as standard equipment to customers.
